A bit of weird car here, so please follow me.
It's a Pink painted US '66 LHD Vert imported to Europe by a German gentleman few years ago. Later car comes to out possession and stayed in its original (read very, very bad) condition for 2 years until now. We have California title and German documents for import taxes have been payed. But the car have California assigned VIN number which grab my attention - it's in sort of CA 123456. Hmmm. Closer look reveal a disaster! Early chassis under '66 Vert body! The dash have one year only specific trim (only two pieces ) with correct glove box door (with 3 big holes on the back for easy trim install) and radio hole looks exactly the same as this one and have special radio mounting plate installed on that four "fingers" (grabbed a photo from gallery, sorry):
So this is enough to confirm that the body is '66, right?
Now the pan - it's king-pin front beam, with 5 lugs front/rear brake drums, short rear axle, old style pedals, old style hand brake and rotary knob for heating. Stamped VIN by VW says that the chassis is early '62. Engine is late '65 Beetle.
All this explain weird body to chassis mounting.
Now the question. To be correct this car must have:
Later chassis with ball joint front beam, 5 lugs front/back brake drums and short rear axle.
Am I right? Thanks! _________________ The glory never gets old, it just need new paint. |

Yep, Body is '66. well at least the part you show is '66. Vin should start 146
Look thorough my gallery for more '66 details if you need it.

There also were a very few late 66 ghias that were balljoint swingaxle with 4 lugs. My wife has one that is 4 lug.??? and it was 100% factory made that way. _________________ Joe

Yes disk brakes in front. I had Scott Dempster from KGP&R fame look her car over and he was very interested to see it was a factory deal that way and all numbers match up to be a very late 66 car as well. So far its the only one i have come acrossed like this ??? _________________ Joe
