Question for those that might have a tip; yesterday I was out putting around in the bug, it was running fine and I drove it maybe 30-40 miles. About 2 miles from the house as Im driving thru a neighborhood had to break sort of quick for a yellow light. All of a sudden I can tell it starts running rough and wont idle at all. I got it home barely and it will start and run if I keep my foot into the gas but will not idle at all. Any ideas on why having to brake quick might affect idle? Fuel filter bowl is full so Im thinking it cant be a fuel delivery issue.

Odd, I had a similar thing happen yesterday as I was driving around town. It behaved as if the idle cut-off solenoid had become disconnected so that there wasn't a good flow of gas. When I pulled over and checked it turns out that the ignition wire had come off the coil terminal but was just touching it. I had the timing light connected to check the timing a few minutes earlier and must have jostled it loose when removing the power lead. Reconnected it, made sure it was snug and went on my merry way w/out any further issues.

I suppose another option could be that junk in your carb bowl got jostled around and sucked into the jet when you hit the brakes and took off again?

So after finishing my coffee this morning I decide to take one more look at the engine and just see if I can see anything before I figure my next step. Sure as hell I notice one of the wire connections to my coil had become detached. Pushed it back on and now it idles like a champ and drives just fine. Vamram thanks so much for the tip, that was exactly the problem!

Well, my tip #1 is go go out and tighten the female connector a tad with a pliers so that this does not slip off again.

Tip #2 is to tighten connectors on the entire VW.
