Good Morning Fellas,
Yesterday I got the buck shaped up for an optional hardtop for my current Spyder. I've started in shaping up the roof. The windscreen will be replaced with a new design to fit the canopy. I'm really happy with the lines of the top. From the side it has a little Koenigsegg in it... I'll get more pics as the project continues. Thanks for all the kind words and suggestions. It's been a lot of fun-

Really like the way that you are going with this project. Any ideas of what you will do for driver access to the interior? I noticed some dimples in the side panels where a door might be cut in. _________________ Jack Staggs

No doors on this one. The dimples in the side are hand planished rivets. Here's another angle on the final roof lines.

I'm almost pissed off when I read about your work. It's so right on the money cool that I get jealous and I think I actually get angry. Keep up the good work and thanks for shaping my opinion on what I now view as my dream car. Can't wait to see more of your creations. |

Thanks Dashoop. It's one of my dream cars too! Here's the latest after completing the windscreen and some rain testing.

This is such a PERFECT application of almost forgotten metal-forming techniques mainly used in home-built aircraft in the 40's, 50's and 60's. I grew up on an airport and really miss the cool home-builts my dad and others made back then. Seems like fiberglass ruined us for actual metal working. I was very shocked to see the young age of the craftsman responsible for this beauty, I had expected an old duffer like myself, toiling away in his sunset years. Great to see a youngster (anyone under 50) using such a dated but stylish model to influence his fabulous hand-built special. Tom Hanna would be proud of your craftsmanship. He made most of the beautiful front-engined dragster bodies in the 60's, and his cars shared the flowing beauty of your design, although the designs are vastly different, the function is the same. Strange how long it took for styling to come back around to the short, flowing lines, like the Audi TT. Wetted area equals drag, so the lower powered cars needed short, small bodies just like yours. I watched many specials race at the Texas Sunburn and Frostbite races in the 50's and 60's, but yours is Waaay cooler for being so smooth and professional looking, and streetable to boot. Congratulations, Young Man !!! |

Thank You miniwhl! It's such a pleasure to hear stories like yours. This is a big part of what makes doing this work so satisfying. Today I rolled the car out for it's first start in over 2 months! It was providential, just as I took off for my maiden voyage with the new hard top the sky let loose with giant rain drops. Here's some raw video of me bringing life back into the old girl...

Yes, my car will not have much of a muffler, not at first anyway. _________________ I have a German look bug, it was built in Germany and looks like it.

I saw the ebay ad and was immediately hooked, a little searching hipped me to this thread and the vids you have done.
Your story and your passion are as cool as the car you built! It's great to hear you give respect to the people that shared their talent and knowledge with you. I'm guessing they see a reflection of themselves.
Keep it up, anxious to see what happens with the AutoUnion build (even though I'm more of a D type open cockpit fan).

Hi Chris,
This is Adrian from Facebook. I was just curious if you could post the engine build you used to get 85+ hp out of your 1200. I know you dabbled with grinding down a 912 crank to fit into your crankcase and you posted something about using an Isky crank... I am interested to know what you settled on and if you built the engine for your FF coupe with the same specs. |
