Well I am still here plugging away at my Bus. There have been some tent sales in our area and I have been able to procure some more audio bits for my bus.
I picked up a set of Focal 165 A3 3 way components speakers that I will be running up front mounted in the doors. I will be using bamboo salad bowl sections to step the speakers out of the door panels. These should give me a kick ass sound staging in the front of the Bus.
I also just purchased through Ebay a set of Focal 165 A1 2 way speakers for the rear. The 2 way speakers will mount the 6.5 woofer in the hatch panel with the inverted dome tweeter mounted up in the corners of the cargo area , to give good coverage and sweet balance to the fronts.
In the mid section of the bus I am still running the Focal 165 coaxial speakers as a mid fill.
The bus is still waiting to go to a spray booth. I have to get a few kids out of the house to afford the next step....
My Son is headed to the College of the Sequoias, anyone near there? And hopefully, one of my Daughters is headed back to Duquesne, if she hasn't ruined all her chances there. Who knew kids would be so expensive?
I'll try and get some pics up of the new components and intended location... still waiting on that crappy new Ebay international shipping system...it sucks hard.

Gordo, what was the actual HID drop in piece that you used? OEM or aftermarket? Looks like it has a nice thread in part with a good diameter to mount in the back of the donor reflector. _________________ My '65-Subaru EJ20 Turbo conversion |

It was aftermarket, ebay, china...good stuff though. The projector beam HIDs are switched from hign to low with a mechanical shutter to cut the beam down for low beams. I think this may have been covered more completely in the light upgrade thread?

Well as mentioned earlier, I am still working on the Bus when I can.
The audio portion of this project is taking on a life of it's own and sucking up much of my time. I like my music to sound it's best no matter where I listen, so I am doing what I can to have this Bus sound as good as it can.
I think I have all the speakers I need now. It is a full Focal System (proper sub drivers will come later, need more tent sales), 3-ways up front, coaxial mid-ship, and 2-ways in the hatch. The subs fit under the rear seat.
The 3-way component speaker system up front will mount in the doors. As much as I hate to have to cut into the door panels, it really is the best place to mount these. I built them into some bamboo salad bowls which carries on with the other bamboo accents that the bus will have. The bowls were cut down to size, backed with fibreglass, coated with varithane and sanded to a satin finish. Fibreglass pods were fitted to the doors and filled with insulation to help deaden the rear firing (sound canceling) sound.
I have narrowed my search for the proper amp down to the Alpine PDX-V9, which will supply 100W into 4 channels and 500W to the subs.
More updates will follow as I get more done.

More of the bamboo accents mentioned above.
The walk through.
Bamboo wood slats for the rear cargo.
These were from office depot. It was a bamboo desk chair roller mat that I re-purposed for the bus.

Thanks guys.
I should have time tomorrow to begin the laminating up of the bamboo for the arm rests ( made out of bamboo cutting boards )....so if anyone out there has some pics and dimensions of all the arm rests I would be grateful for them.

Just trying to keep things up to date with my build thread (if not for anyone who is following, but for my own documentation and memories).
I have the Bamboo armrests completed, except for the mounting holes in the long panel armrests (still need that dimension, no help coming on dedicated thread). I fashioned a VW emblem out of Bamboo to be mounted on the hatch panel between the speakers. And now I am working the Bamboo/Baltic Birch cup holders that will swing out of the dash corners.
The long panel armrests I am very pleased with. The baltic birch layer really showed up well in the end.
Here is the cup holder location, being held up in the closed position. The shape of the cup holder follows the shape of the dash when closed.
Now in the open position.
Here with the door closed.
On the bottom of the cup holder top support a cup I will bent up a piece of 3/16" steel rod to go down from the wood under the cup and back up to the wood, at a depth that will still clear the parcel tray.

Thanks guys.
I had a chance to collect some bits from the hardware store to complete the mechanism of the cup holders. I found some nylon shouldered sleeves to fit the pivot point and a bracket that lines up with the existing hole for the dash tray, to help support the pivot bolt.
Here it is.
The hole in the cup holder is big enough for my Nalgene bottle.
But, not too big to let more precious cargo through.
Still need to thread the top portions of the 3/16" rod so a nut can stop them from dropping out the bottom.
For the most part I am pleased with the location and function of them, plus the Bamboo and baltic birch will tie in well with the rest of the accent pieces once varathaned and polished up.

So after I built the cup holders for the front seat people, my Daughter gave me a look and said," so the people in the back don't get a cup holder?" followed with a slight scoffing noise of disapproval .
So, I went back to work on this. I bought a door skin of baltic birch for $13.48 and thought I could laminate it in an interesting shape. What I came up with is a simple curve that mimics the roof line of the bus. It will be mounted to the walk through divider behind the driver, so that the middle seat passengers can both reach it.
This is still at the sanding stage. It will have a 3/16 rod passing from side to side to hold the drinks from falling through similar to the front cup holders. I am also looking for some Bamboo veneer so the top layer will be Bamboo.
More pics coming once the varithane is played on and polished.

Thanks. I hope it seemed obvious that the bolt was just there to hold it up for the shot.
I am at a bit of a quandary though as to mount it as shown or upside-down ?

My vote is for "as is". But...seeing it both ways in place might make a difference. _________________ -Tim

Thanks, your vote matches my wife and daughters, so I don't even know why I asked beyond them in the first place.
I did however find a couple of spun aluminum water bottles that I will cut and fit as the cup of the cup holder and paint them to match the interior.

It has been awhile since I have updated the build thread with any progress. I will admit the progress has much slower than I have would have wished for. But the steps that I am taking are rich in detail and are steps that I never would have done if the progress had not nearly stalled completely.
I am adding to the list of Bamboo interior trim pieces that I have previously built. I am building a Bamboo/Carbon fiber reproduction of a VDM steering wheel.
Like this one:
The wheel is being constructed out of a 1/4" steel core and hub plate, layers of carbon fibre in the centre lamination, with laminated layers of natural and carbonized (dark) Bamboo strips.
The build and discussion of the wheel can be found in this thread: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=611793
But here are a few pics of the progress so far.

So what's your plan for cladding the steel frame with the bent laminated parts? My plan of attack would have been to roll a hoop from some flat steel and laminate that within the bamboo layers. I'm very curious how you're going to to do this..
Nice work on the laminating, it'll be bear strong for sure. |
