How well do those tire inflator a work? More of an emergency thing? I can imagine some fuel vapor would get pumped into the tires. Wouldn't that be bad for the rubber? _________________ 1800 Type 4 Berrien 295

My uncle is sitting on this gem, i keep trying to buy it from him.
40s style dune buggy, i saw them called doodlebugs earlier in this thread but i believe that is only the ones converted to tractors (steel wheels or belts) _________________ 1970 Baja Bug. |

I love the doodle bugs and water pumpers.
I would pick that thing up in a heartbeat. Buy that thing as soon as you can. _________________ Wash your hands

Sure Van. I'll stop by next time on the way out to the desert in my Baja.
Or not....
I actually think there is probably some really pretty country and lots of fun offroading up there. But it's like 2,500 miles away and not on the way to anywhere else I might be going. So I'll have to pass. Thanks for the invite anyway.
The spark plug inflator works pretty well. A little faster than most 12Volt compressors that plug into the cigarette lighter. I haven't tried one of the newer ones of those, like the 4Wheel Parts ones though. But it was a little less expensive.
That 31 Model A doodle bug is pretty cool. That term was used some out here in SoCal in the early days. and there were some buggies similar to that. I used to know an old guy who roamed the Mojave Desert prospecting in a late 40s Oldsmobile doodle bug kinda like that Model A. His had an early 50s Olds pushrod V8, most of the body cut away, the wheelbase shortened, a 20 gallon barrel laid over on its side for a gas tank, re-bar for a grille, water pipe for bumpers, steel skidplates, and 1950s-style fiberglass cafeteria chairs for seats. _________________ Richard

For as cool as it looks f I had it I'd build the existing firewall windshield frame into a t-bucket style body and swap it over to more modern frame, (ranger, explorer or f100 most likely) _________________ 1970 Baja Bug. |

Wellll...
That engine, trans, frame, cowl, hood, firewall, floor, all came from the factory together as a 1931 Ford Model A. Considering that, I would keep it as original as I could.
But the concept of a similar doodle bug based on a Ranger pickup or something of that sort holds some fine potential. _________________ Richard

Wow! Somebody else has a Gibson!!!! Cool!
Mine also has a Wisconsin single cylinder. But the carb is the sidedraft Stromberg just like found on a Model A. Maybe mine has a bigger Wisconsin than yours.
Maybe we could exchange pics and such off this thread. _________________ Richard

Mal, Where in the hell are you finding these pictures
Do you have names or dates?
Looks like the rear torsion is broken. Spring plate? Something of the sort broken.
This looks to be early 60s, probably no later than 66 judging by clothing and surrounding vehicles.
In the early 60s, a neighbor on the next block had a similar Baja Bug. It was an oval window like this one. Had a VW 40horse engine with home-made dual exhaust that aimed up and back. Original taillights mounted beside the rear window. Back bumper made of straight tube. The front body was cut off like the Emory's famous "1st Baja Bug" that was built in the late 60s. But the neighbor's had galvanized sheet steel for a front panel and a front bumper made of steel tubing with a pair of headlights from an old 1930s car. He ran around town and in the local hills at the north end of the San Fernando Valley with it. Sometimes they went out to the desert near Palmdale and El Mirage. I saw it once with dual rear wheels kinda like this when they were headed out to Pismo. No hubcaps. VW wheel centers. They had it on a trailer made of Army surplus landing mat, but the outboard rear tires were hanging off the sides.
His next door neighbor had a water pumper buggy like the one in the background of the pic. 6 cylinder Ford engine and dual rear tires. Noisy unmuffled straight dragster type headers. Then about 65 or so he had the local muffler shop build a set of headers that were 3-into-1 into left and right exhaust with mufflers. Same time he replaced the little 1bbl carb with a pair of Holley 4bbls with a "Cobra" dual quad air cleaner with stacked elements. I think he had a bunch of other go-fast work done on that 6 in a row at the same time. He was always working on short track stock cars and drag cars in his back yard garage. _________________ Richard

tumblr is a site that host many sorts of photos. Some are VERY NSFW.
But there is some stuff on there which is interesting other than sex.
Do you have a link or are you willing to post it? _________________ Richard
