Ok the bus is going to Paint this week.
Love me or hate me, I can not do the all Pearl White L87 Bus.
This was the factory color but even in 1970 someone made it two tone red.
I was hoping someone had painted their bus Pearl White / Sealing Wax Red for me to see what that combo looked like.
The bus top is staying Pearl White, I am looking for a good (not too dark) red VW color for the bottom. Any suggestions? |

You could do the new Tornado Red (2014 beetle), montana red (bay window) or Titan red (great color on a splitty) _________________ Can't polish a turd!

Since it's a Kombi and you don't want L87 why not shoot it Ruby Red on the entire bus. That would be year correct and is a great looking color:
Or Pearl White/Ruby Red:

I don't blame you about the pearl white top to bottom. It is a handsome color for sure but it's more on the subtle side of vw colors. If I paint my bus one day I'll probably do velvet green/pearl white. +1 on the ruby red. _________________ "A rolling bus gathers no rust." |

Thank you for the feedback so far!
I love the Ruby Red. I talked to the body guy and he is afraid that the darker the red the more flaws that can be seen. (To be fair the bus is named "patches" for a good reason.
Any thoughts on the Pearl White / Sealing Wax Red combo? |

Interesting dilemma...
L87 pearl white is a 'restrictive' colour IMO..it wont just roll-over and blend with any old colour below the swage line.
If you're adamant about sticking with L87 ontop then IMO you should go for a colour than can also take a certain percentage of L87 within it, without looking too odd. This will be difficult. VW two-colour kombos obey a lot of classic rules - this is one of the reasons they look great. Two-colour combinations, for example, share more common colour cross-over than you'd think (break down some Glasurit percentage colour codes for example...mango and seagull grey, for example).
Edit: (cut lots of colour theory stuff) the pic below looks ok but will look very different depending on the light conditions. In cold or blue-ish conditions I dont think it would look anywhere near as nice as it does here.

Make sure your paint guy uses single stage paint IMO. _________________ "A rolling bus gathers no rust." |

Thank you stuco!!!!
I had my reservations but that looks awesome!
Thank you everyone for your input, but the last picture seals the deal.
It will be single stage paint. I hope to have the bus back in 3-4 weeks. |

wow, this looks really good. And yes it is inspiring me to keep at my project. I'm working on a camper and it was also L87 Pearl White all over. I'm considering a 2 tone or different color also, so your post is interesting. You have some skills. The stands for the doors are a great idea too. I assume those shots are after wet sanding? _________________ I need a long camper side WINDOW for a 66 Riviera - please let me know if you have one!
