Just finished cleaning the 59 out. Some things not as bad as I thought and some visa versa. Both pans have to be replaced, both A pillars where they meet the heater channel need repair, left B pillar needs patching. The hood is the wrong year. Found bondo in places.
Car is still 6 volts, not sure if I want to keep that part, what y'all think.
On the other hand I found the original oil bath breather behind the back seat.
Removed about 20 gallons of peacons, believe the squirrels used it as a storage bin. On the other hand there was no rat poop or signs of rats at all.
To dark for pictures will take some tomarrow. |
I can tell you that if it is working properly, 6 volt works just fine. Remember last winter down here was pretty brutal? Well that's when I started driving my '59 daily. The entire car was covered in a thick sheet of ice. I had to break it off of the door handle and thaw out the lock to get in the car but she started right up. The only time my 6 volts have failed me was because I didn't check the water level in the battery so it was my own stupid fault. My only complaint is that my headlights are too dim, however I'm sure that if I put a new harness in the car it would solve that. A lot of mine was hacked up when it was converted to US spec and just needs a totally new harness.
I say leave it stock, it's all there and original.
The rust sounds typical but not bad at all for a factory ragtop car. My car too needs pans and that pillar where the lower door hinge is needs replacing as well on the driver's side.
Gah, I wish Dothan wasn't so far away, I'd be over there checking it out! I just love me some 58/59s |
Yeah I agree wish B'ham wasn't so far away, would be great to have a ya near help eachother out on fixing rust. Pretty sure a new wiring harness is in order for this one. _________________ Jonathan

The I'd plate on this car is of course in German. I have been unable to verify the type on any chart or I'm just looking in the wrong place.
I believe this is the type (TYP. VW1/11) I took a picture but just can't upload using an iPad. Will get youbugme2 to post them. |

58, I speak and read German. I'll be glad to explain the phrases on your ID plate once there's a good, sharp photo posted. |

Still has the KPH speedo in it! That's pretty sweet.
Judging from the charts here on the samba, looks like that's a Dec 58 built car.
It's looks like a very solid car for being a sunroof car in the south. _________________ All he needed was a wheel in his hand and four on the road.

re; your semiphores, could you disassemble the good one to see how they are constructed and then you'd know how youre going to address the jammed one? |

Did not realize the glass was not safety glass. Not sure if it's because it's a euro or is before the invention but correct or not it's not boing back in. May keep the rear that's all . |

We have started taking it apart and filing everything into crates. The rag assy is off, that wasn't bad to do. Rollers and all the parts are great, some pin holes in the rear where the bar bolts to the body of the car. I looked inside the gas tank out of morbid curiosity. It was drained before it was parked. The inside looks brand new, the fuel reserve valve still moves well, but pretty sure any seals that are in it are shot.
I got the semiphores out, I took one out and saw what someone was talking about to use a pic to move the lever. Was easy to do, havn't tested them yet. Going to get a 6v battery and just see what they do, there isn't any rust on them but sure they need some lubing. _________________ Jonathan
