Thanks guys!
Alright, update time. The molded corner window rubber & trim is installed, although it was an unreal pain getting it all in. I learned real quick that silicone spray is your best friend to get it done. Easiest one we had was the Chinese windshield that seems to break on everyone. Slipped right in for us.
Fenders, fender beading & running boards are all permanently in place now. Rear bumper went on without any issue except there was no third hole for the bumper guard to mount to, so I attached them to the outside hole for now. Still deciding if I want to drill the blade to put them in the proper place or leave them as is. Still putting together the front bumper.
The second ragtop (dyed hydrate green) went in over the weekend, and came out great, although there's a couple small issues that need to be addressed - there's a gap in the headliner near the rear of the sunroof that developed after we tightened everything down, and we need to curl down the front seam of the ragtop cover.
I'll be heading to the paint shop one final time this week to get green dye mixed up for the upper/lower sections of the door panels. I already have the ice blue for the middle section of the door panels, visors, and grab handles.
Expecting to keep working out small details over the long weekend, and get the doors & seats all put together. I'm having a set of LED tail lights made by Chip Birks who lives just down the street from me, hoping they'll be ready sometime this week as well. Next week will be fine tuning and wrapping up loose ends.
Enjoy the crappy iphone pics.

Overdue update. The great news is the car is just about done. The engine runs well, brakes work great, and everything else works EXCEPT....the brake lights. Brake lights run through the 6-wire turn signal switch in 60-61 and I've isolated the problem there so I'm working through that issue now.
To finish up the upholstery, we used some new TMI 2-tone door panels and dyed them the correct colors. They turned out better than we expected. We also dyed the sun visors and grab handles. Seat frames were painted ice blue, and covered with WW fiber pads and seat covers.
After upholstery was wrapped up we installed the hood, got the brakes working (our local VW guru Dr. Dave helped us out with those), upgraded the wipers to a '67 motor and new WW switch to have 2 speeds, installed LED tail/brake lights that our neighbor & friend Chip Birks built for us, then put in the gas tank.
Last steps are to align the wheels aligned and get the brake lights working. Expecting to have it wrapped up in the next week. Almost there!
Here's a few pics

The car looks wonderful! Great accomplishment to see it through to the finish. You and your sons drive and enjoy it in good health. |

Not yet, but I have He's been at his mom's place for the past couple weeks and it's killing him that he hasn't been able to drive it yet. He'll back back on Saturday and I'm sure I'll be posting a pic of him behind the wheel with an ear to ear grin on his face. _________________ 1950 Pearl Grey Hoffman Standard Split Window

I had it color matched & mixed by my paint shop. They recommended spraying an adhesion promotor on the vinyl before the dye, which I did and it made a huge difference in how the dye laid down, dried, and the final color. _________________ 1950 Pearl Grey Hoffman Standard Split Window

Much like a few others here I just came across this project Just wanted to say that it's awesome and inspiring!
Great job
Very curious; that rear bow plate of the rag mechanism. Where did you get that? Did you also replace the front bow plate (which is attached to the front ragtop beam)? I've been looking for a new set as mine are ... well.. uhm "original" and "patina"-d _________________ '60 AWO Simson 425T

Appreciate the kind words everyone.
I did get the rear plate from WW - high quality and it fit great. I reused the original front bow as it was still in good condition - just needed to be cleaned up and painted. I'm not aware of anyone reproducing the front bow, but there may be someone out there that does. If yours doesn't have serious patches of cancer affecting the structural integrity it could probably be reused - it's hidden under the ragtop cover anyway so no one will know it's ugly. _________________ 1950 Pearl Grey Hoffman Standard Split Window

Many thanks for the tip. I've asked my local reseller to get me a WW rear bolt down plate. The original rear plate is a real goner (ripped rag cover > water and dust got free play).
The front bow same story basically. The 52 year old rag cover is still on, though with holes and rips, which caused a pretty bad bow. I looks 'characteristic' or rat as some may say but it definitely needs replacement.

Which kind (or brand) of adhesion promotor did you use? I'm currently working on dyeing rags for my car as well as others and I'm curious about the difference in result (with and without the promotor). As you say the difference is huge it makes me think I should try it as well.... _________________ '60 AWO Simson 425T

Before trash your rear bow, I repaired my front bow with some of the good metal left from the rear bow. Its the right thickness and with a little tweeking with a ball hammer it came out perfect. Look at the last few pages of my build thread. Remember the ending looks does not matter as it get covered up, just use some rust mort or rust preventer to stop it from advancing and paint it for pretection. _________________ 59 Euro Ragtop Build (Finished)

I used Bulldog Adhesion Promoter. I initially sprayed one of the visors without the bulldog and the color was patchy, faded and just wouldn't stick properly to the vinyl. It took 4-5 coats of dye to even out the patches, but the color still didn't look right. I sprayed the bulldog on the other visor and the difference was night and day. Color was bright and even, and only required 2 coats of dye.
This link shows the Bulldog product I used, although I didn't buy it from here:

absolutely beautiful job! I too just found this and was sad to see the last post! haha cant wait to see Wade on the road with this beauty! Quick question on your rag? was that your original middle bow that you refinished or were you able to buy a replacement? I lost mine when I moved cross country. Forgot I didn't have my short rails on and if flew off on a 3 lane freeway.... grant it, it did not survive. |
