|
|
The rear hatch lock of my 1971 squareback is stuck shut. When I bought the car a few months ago the lock was seized in the unlocked position. In an effort to free the lock using graphite and gentle pressure it seemed to unseize and turned to the locked position.
Unfortunately, now it won't turn back to the fully unlocked position...so the hatch will not open. How can I get the hatch open so I can remove the latch/lock and repair as necessary? |

I would climb over the back seat or put it down and crawl back there, remove the rear hatch panel and pop it open. _________________ "What we obtain too cheap, we esteem too lightly: 'tis dearness only that gives everything its value. I pulled the interior panel but don't think I can get to the actual latch. It appears as if the latch is covered by another sheet metal panel with a small oval shaped hole in it.
What should I be looking for to "pop it open". Do I need to stick something into the oval shaped hole? What tool would I need to use?
Thanks in advance! |

Maybe I'll just drill the lock and replace it. Someone please stop me if there is a better way.
A few questions remain...
1. Can the rear hatch lock be rekeyed by a locksmith to match my currently matching door and ignition locks (assuming I were to purchase a used button/lock cylinder replacement)?
2. There are several replacements available in the classifieds. Can anyone tell me if there are there different parts for different model year cars, or is the button/lock cylinder a one part fits all type of part?
Thanks! |

I suppose I will be drilling it out. Thanks! Not sure how the heck I didn't find that thread while searching the first time. Oh well.
Am I to assume that all model years are created equal in regards to the button/lock? Clearly the latch and striker changed in the later years. |

Why not take your car/parts to a local Locksmith before you destroy what you have? _________________ http://s169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/mr_bojangles500/

Currently the key turns in the lock, quite well actually. It just won't turn to the fully unlocked position where I could remove the key and/or open the hatch. The hatch will not open so I can't take the locksmith just the parts.
Is there something additional that a locksmith could do? I was under the impression that the most a locksmith could do is cut a new key, which I don't think I need. |

No, they are not all the same. I think up to 70 is 1 style, and 71 to 73 is another. The lock button changed with the latch. |
Thanks! I found a button from a 73, which should hopefully fit my 71...
If the local locksmith can re-key it I'll be back in business. |
