and on the removing of blades I had entertained doing that to one of my wide DH fans.& testing the amount of air it changed by doing it.but toomuch stuff in the way as it is. |
Mark, I thought that you weren't interested in cfm stats | for me there useless unless you have the pressure or pressure drop they are rated at so they can be compared.just like comapring cylinder head cfm from 1 shop to another,if shop "a" has a head and it dont flow as much or more than shop "C" then just flow it at a higher pressure so it does, but it dont. but 99% of the guys buying heads dont know that and they buy what the sails man is spewing fourth to sell his lower flowing hp head as a better more expensive than the higher better head.
with that said I havent a clue as to how fans are rated on these things.(bugs included) |

This is a great topic. I wonder if anyone can improve on the stock VW fan. BTW 1 liter/sec = 2.119 cfm so a stock doghouse style fan putting out 600 L/s at 4000 engine rpm ( 6400-7200 fan rpm depending on belt length) puts out 1271 cfm.
Airflow (cfm) is linear, 10% increase in rpm=10% increase in flow.
Pressure is progressive by the square, 10% increase in rpm=21% increase in pressure, a 10% decrease in rpm= 19% decrease in pressure.
Power to drive is progressive by the cube, 10% increase in rpm=33% increase in power needed to drive, 10% decrease in rpm=27% decrease in power needed to drive.
How about a backward curve airfoil design? How about something similar to a turbocharger compressor impeller?
I think a fan with more cfm potectial running at a slower speed for efficiency might be the ticket.
Keep thinking and trying! I'd like to see someone come up with a better design than stock. I like all the mad scientists on this forum! |

| thanks for that info!! I like the turbo type or the backwardcurve airfoil desigine.I have thought about using a stator from a torque converter, and other things, what would a doghouse fan do with every other blade removed do? or every 3rd fin gone?Im sure there is a better mouse trap that has been made in the past 30 years(probably in the past 10) but we just have to find it,fit it, test it and test it somemore. |

Thats funny.. Today we just shipped the FINAL Type 1 that will ever be produced on this property to it's owner.. It was my personal engine from 1997. I have eliminated all of our Type 1 cores, thrown away all the other parts and its all gone now except one "Type None" race engine that I have had parts for since around 2001. I'll probably build some quarter mile wonder and use that engine some day as it has 97mm Nickies and lots of trick goodies...
As of today the Type 1 is officially no longer supported here in ANY form or fashion, we replaced all of the junk T1 stuff and old cores with modern, 4 valve EJ series Suby engines that will be the new rage in a very short period of time.
Thank God~

It's a shame. |
Actually there are... I have completed development on a couple of Type 4 based offerings that are comprised of 100% USA Made components to include USA raw materials.. No one else has ever done this and it has been a bitch, the new look of my website illustrates where our aircooled engine program has gone. |
You may want to post this under the Subaru forum, or perhaps the not quite finished website forum. Some of us actually like talking about VW's, frustrations and all... |
Good one........I like my type 1 engine....it actually has heat. _________________ 57 Horizon Blue Oval
