Hey Crofty, I wouldn't drive my VW just to go look ay some cars either. I will however drive my bus there to partake in the festivities of this event and to camp out in it..
Flags for different nations is great idea as well as flags representing clubs or individuals so that we all can put a face to the name we see on the Samba.
As for the different generations, I would welcome the hippie types as well as all the other types of people ever associated with VW's. |

At the risk of having stones thrown at me and being accused of creating the new VW 1%ers, I started a brief topic today about a national concours event not realizing this thread was active. My bad.
For what it is worth, I believe the hobby would be best served by forming a national concours event. Such an event would try and draw the best 50-100 VWs across the vintage air cooled categories (splits, barndoors, coach builts, etc.) together for a show, judging, and awards. The national draw would be based on quality, not qty (i.e. come and see the best collection of VWs in the country). You would not try and get everyone to bring their VWs to show - they are coming to see great VWs in the show.
That would give the national event a purpose (to display the best of vintage VWs and judge them accordingly to determine the best). That is very different from all the regional events which are based on an "all inclusive" approach and can only provide regional awards.
I believe the event should probably start on the west coast to give it the best chance of getting off the ground with a quality field.
Just my feedback. I think pulling together the finest show of VWs in our country has a bigger chance of having a sustained purpose then trying to pull together the biggest show (in terms of the number of VWs present).
When you want to see the "best of the best", it requires a national draw. That is why it needs to be a national show. The venue should reflect the quality of the field (i.e. something really nice and well presented).
Again, I very well might be in a minority of one that feels this way! However, I would travel in the states to see a field of fantastic VWs. I can go to my local show to see a field of "average" VWs. No offense... I love average VWs... I have several! |
Why the hell would anyone want to go see a bunch of trailer queen VW's? If I'm going to drive across country for a show I want to see them all. Old, new, shiny, crappy, lowered, jacked up, etc. Having an elitist show with a bunch of stuck up yuppies judging a car on looks rather then the labor and love then went into them already happens. It's called Pebble Beach. If that's your thing and you can afford a trailer queen, good for you. The rest of us can't but deserve a fair share of the pie too. I do like Riqs57 idea of having a designated area for the trailer queens and don't get me wrong, I'd check it out, but don't exclude the rest of us just because we don't measure up to your standard of what a car is. Okay… rant over _________________ '75 Hard Top Westfalia 2.0L F.I.

| I will be speaking with VWOA some time around august to discuss next years schedule and see if they have some interest in sponsorship. I do believe they will and I will contact VW of Canada as well as South America. I think by that time we will have a date for next year. I would still like to hear more feed back on date and time that would work for the majority of us. |

Ditto.
My parents own a Porsche 356 and we went to the Palm Springs 356 show last year. One 356 that took part in the show was, literally, brought in on a trailer fresh out of the restoration shop. Beautiful car, but I honestly had more respect for those vehicles that were driven into the show from 5 states away, were mostly original complete with minor "flaws", etc. If I want to see nothing but trailer queens, that's what magazines (print/electronic) and forums are for; I don't need to drive thousands of miles and spend hundreds on fuel just to see only "the elite" of the vintage air-cooled world for a day. If I'm going to a national VW show, it better have Volkswagens from split-window Beetles up to present-day models, from modified to stock, from all-original to restorations, and everything in between. _________________ ~Kamz

Hey Mr Rigs57,
Just got back off a road trip and following up on your attempts to set up
a national show. Wanted to make a suggestion. If you haven't yet picked out a site yet, could I suggest SPRINGFIELD, MISSOURI?
Centraly located in the U.S. Its the third largest city in the state with a
population of about 160,00. Large enough to provide all kinds of
eating, shopping, and hotels and motels for visitor's and still provide
small town atmosphere. Just a half hour from Joplin and world famous
Branson, Missouri. The city is serviced by two airports, one a regional
airport with service to Denver, Chicago, and Dallas for folks that might fly in. The city is sited on historic route 66 and has access to many freeways for people coming from all directions.
I was impressed by the place and would invite your attention.
It might be just the place your looking for if a final choice is yet to be made. |

Mr Mike, I appreciate your suggestion.
Right now I have been in talks with the folks over at Heartland Park near Topeka Kansas. They have plenty of space for campers, concessions, a drag strip, a dirt oval, and a 2.5 mile road course that can be arranged into different track layouts. They also have pit garages that can be used for either pits or vendors to sell there goods.
I'm thinking we get the whole drag racing community involved and invited as well as the formula V vintage races as well. An auto cross event sounds interesting as well as I am seeing more and more VW's attending these auto cross competitions.
There are also bathroom facilities with showers and they will also arrange portable showers and porta johns. I have been told that there are several camp areas easily capable of hosting all those wanting to camp including full hook ups which are limited.
We are thinking this to be at least a 5 day event to try and accommodate everyone and their schedule so that everyone has a chance to attend. So far this seems to be the best facility for this size and type of event. |

I too like others have mentioned...Trailer Queens are just that. Most of the owners kow how to drive it off the trailer and back on. Have they ever actually struggled with a rusty bolt....bet they wrote the check for it.
I like other would not drive to Topeka to see trailer queens.
Include all of us original unrestored cars like mine in patina and dry check window seals that my numbers all match.
Judging by an outside group that does not own a VW. _________________ Volkswagen: We tune what we drive.

Move on it so most of us that are interested can make plans for a week long trip. KC is a 2 day or more drive for most of us. _________________ Volkswagen: We tune what we drive.

There is also Kansas Speedway (NASCAR track) although I would think it would be more difficult as well as expensive dealing with them vs an independent one like Heartland www.hpt.com _________________ John

Just so there's no confusion:
1. There is no show.
2. There is no date.
3. There is no location.
This is all a fantasy at this point, so if you clicked on this thread looking for information about an actual show, I'll spare you the task of reading through all 7 pages.
For information about real shows look here:
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewforum.php?f=16
or here:

If there is any actual news, progress, or anything involving real planning for a show, send me a PM and I'll reopen this thread. |
