What a fantastic job you did. Tell your friend not to park it on the street.

Laughing Ha!
Yep....that's the exact parking spot that started this restoration back in 2002.
Larry has a good spot lined up for it indoors. Him and his wife live in a historic neighborhood in the Lafayette Square area of St Louis and their restored 137 year old house was part of this years annual Holiday Parlor Tour.
Larry made sure his little bug was front and center while thousands of people walked by. He put a sign in the window telling the story. It drew almost as much attention as the houses did.
These little cars have touched so many lives through the years...everyone that looked at it seemed to have a connection to one.

Mike is right. Everybody has a fond VW story and it was a nice extra for the house tour visitors. If we could give everybody in the world a Beetle, there'd be universal peace and justice. Very Happy

I don't know about universal peace and justice but there'd be a whole lot more parking spaces Razz

In my church resale shop I spied a very old, funky suitcase marked down to $1.00. I gave them $5 because I had an idea.

I took some scrap foam rubber and cut out inserts for the tools. Underneath is a layer of modern stuff like socket set and light, with the original VW tools on top. http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/album_page.php?pic_id=1292903

What a great story!
Can I ask a quick question? Without trying to sound like an ass.... Why did you restore (or use) an aftermarket fender? (Front drivers side)

If the question was directed at me (the restorer)....it was covered in detail early on in the build thread.
I went to Larry (the owner) with the option to find an original and he opted to run the replacement that what was on it. That fender was installed by the previous "restoration shop" back in the 90s without Larry's knowledge. Quite a few OG pieces were "lost" during that "restoration"

It's a product made by USC called All-Metal. Awesome product.
Sticks to metal great, dries hard as a rock and sands easily...little pricy but you get what you pay for.

I realize this car had lots of sentimental value & it's easy to spend more than might be normal on bringing it back to life, but for the average guy who'd like to buy a beetle & fix it up, what kind of money should he budget these days to accomplish the same build you just finished?

I'm also in the mid-west (about 2 hours east of St. Louis) & I'd like to find a beetle or squareback, but don't have a stash of parts to help. I have the space, tools, & equipment to do the work (I've been into Studebakers & Kaisers) & have tinkered on old cars my whole life, but have never been exposed to the VW world before, although I do have a reproduction Kubelwagen setting on a '70 pan). I figure any vehicle I find in this part of the country will probably need the same types of repairs.
thanks,
Mike S

Mike...I'll let Larry chime in if he feels like divulging his cash outlay. What I can say though...is what year car you're after will mean a ton when it comes to the initial purchase. I would suggest you look for as complete a car as you can find and try to find as solid a car as you can find....repair panels can add up quick. If you can locate one with a good engine...you're money ahead too...the motors can be half the budget sometimes. Here in the Midwest, for whatever reason Bugs seem to be getting scarce and the people that have them tend to want a fortune for them...way more than they're worth. Look here on The Samba for deals...I drove 3 1/2 hours one way once to pick up a 58 sliding ragtop.

Mike ..good restorable and running Beetles in the Oval era are probably 5000 or so. You can spend the same getting near original, an all in restoration is probably another 5000 on top of that.

Splits are out of site.

The 1960 up models are still reasonable. I would love to get my hands on a 1965 project...

Mike,

You'd be thousands ahead of the game if your primary focus on the bug you're looking to buy is rust free and has not been hit/front or rear. I wouldn't even consider purchasing a rusty bug locally. Look in the classifieds here or other sites and focus your search in the SW USA. With the fuel costs going down, you can ship one from say California to your home for a resonable fee. You'd be much better off paying the shipping fee vs. spending thousands on rust repair.

There's a reason so my old VW's are being scooped up in California and are being shipped back to England and Europe. They don't have the luxury of having many rust free examples there.
