Congrats on the child rearing. The question is, when are we going to see some laps in this? Looking great |
Thanks. He's a good kid and to my surprise, through all the smart-assness he listens really well and is really careful and methodical with his actions. Which is perfect for engine building,. . . and plotting to burn down the school. . . I'll steer him to the former and hope the later never enters his mind.
As for laps, well you'll have t wait a bit for those since the car will be finished around the end of the typical race season. There will be a series of "runs" though. . .
Since I sent-in my car registration, Dr's certs, waivers and entry fees today, I may as well let everyone know that I'm officially planning to "pop the cherry" on the Squarsche at the Bonneville Salt Flats this September at the World of Speed event (Sept 6th-9th). We'll be attempting to gain entry into the "130 Club" which means we need two consecutive runs with an average between 130.000 - 139.999mph without going over. It's a tall order, but we're going. That's the goal, that's the mission and we're determined to make it.
Oddly, it turns out that there has NEVER been a type3 to compete at Bonneville so we'll be poppin' the cherry on that one too!! There has only been 1 type3 (a Fasty) to ever compete in a land speed event in the world and it was last year in Australia. Apparently they ran into motor issues and only attained a top speed of around 75mph. . . I'm hoping to better that in 3rd gear with another two gears to go.
My son and I have named our race team "Mutt Racing" since the Squarsche is a mutt-car. Our Race number is T-828, so cheer us on come early September.
As a side note: my 14 y/o son is going to be towing me back to the pits after each run since "racing vehicles" are not allowed to drive back under their own power after a run (even if they are in a street car class like the 130 Club). I think my son is more excited about getting to drive my '62 Ranchero tow vehicle than actually being part of a race team competing at Bonneville. . . He went for his first practice today on the back roads. . . I can't get that sh*t-eatin' grin off his face 3 hours later. . . |
Now that sounds like a fun time, and a great way to bond with your kid. We'll definitely be cheering you on. Have fun. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Pretty impressive that you could get a teenager to help.
It's easier when they are little and agreeable.

That's easy, all of Nate's kids + most of their friends. Should be a small caravan. |

It's just going to be Josh and me who goes to the salt. His mom & 4 older sisters all have lives, jobs etc. Should be a good time.

I've driven the Mary Hill course in Goldendale, WA, but not at competition speeds. What a hoot. I plan to race that one. If you ever find yourself on Hwy 97 on the WA side at the vista turnout that overlooks the gorge, that turn-out also overlooks the Mary Hill course just below to the east. It's fun in a car; it's insane on a street luge. . . Never done the luge thing since I'm pretty in-tune with my own mortality, but it's fun to watch. _________________ Regards,

Wow Nate, you are taking the squarish to Bonnaville!?!?
I am amazed to see the progress you made on this over the past year and the amount of custom work you have done to it. Nice work.
Honestly, I thought that square would end up a patched but mechanically sound bucket when I first saw it, and It doesn't look like a black and whilt milk cow anymore for sure.
Its Freakin amazing.
To make it perfect slap a coat of Sea Blue #1 on that sucker and call it a 65' haha.
Be careful on the salt flats, that's too much custom work to do over. |

Good luck on the Salt Nate! I'll be out too in another Ghia running in the 130 club also. Not enough cash for another roll cage to run 150 club again. Your Square is very nice, I'd like to get a closer look in September. Once you run at Bonneville you will be infected with "Salt Fever" and will return many times. This year will be awesome. _________________ 71 Westy Roadcow

Got my fenders and doors back from my body guy, so I hung them on and dragged her outside so I could take a shot for the official program for the World Of Speed event in Bonneville. It's sitting a little ass-high since there's no motor in it. All in all, the debauchery is coming together nicely. . .

Looks good Nate, if you have time before paint I'd shave the drip rails to the top of the door post. Amazing amount of drag they add. _________________ 71 Westy Roadcow

You could also do something like this....
http://www.gerrelt.nl/section-aerodynamics/modifications-windnoise.html
He made a set of raingutter fillers that are similar to those used on Porsche 911's but were fitted to his 1303 Super. _________________ "...these cars were preferred by the racers because the strut front suspension results in far superior handling than the regular torsion bar front end..." - Keith Seume. |

That is exactly what I plan to do with this car. Probably next year though. I'll just duct tape a piece of vinyl tube on the drip rail for now and call it good. I gotta get the darned thing back together for this year. Much to do. . . So little time. . . _________________ Regards,
