Nate, Clatter, when my T34 is done I'll have to bring it over the pond for a holiday
It would be a blast the 3 different Type 3's all with 915's and some serious horsepower hitting the roads together! _________________ My build thread

I found a few pics on-line that were taken of Josh and I at the auto-X back on March 15th. Making the best of a rainy day.
We are looking forward to the next one; hopefully on a drier day. _________________ Regards,

A couple days ago, I found a set of used billet aluminum Porsche 930 Turbo trans mounts for sale cheap, so I snatched them up and installed them on the Squarsche. The shifting is even more precise than before. Really crisp shifts now.
I absolutely love that gear noise from the transmission when you see in-car videos of Porsche's racing on the track (that gear meshing whine that rises and falls with each gear change); it makes the car sound serious and a bit angry to me. Now that the trans is solidly mounted it transfers a bit more of that lovely gear noise that is makes under hard acceleration, into the body of the car. Not too much that it's annoying, but enough to know that it's there. I dig it!! _________________ Regards,

Just a quick look at something I've been working on at my buddies shop in my off time. Stay tuned for more on this in the future. . .

I have been thinking about widening the rear fenders for some time and I see how much work you put into it but my question is why not do most of the metal work that you did and then really just cover it with the skin of a Fender instead of extending the ends of the fender
its like using the fender skin as the flare and then you would just have to add a little bit of metal to the inside instead of extending the entire body _________________ 74 Mexi Swamp Thing. 70 square volksrod (Swamp Rat)..65 C10

Nate went that route because he wanted it more "stock" looking, and is building a sleeper, not a VolksRod. In other words, he wanted to fit the wide tires and rims on the car, but keep them inside the fenders. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

What Bob said.
Actually, once I got it figured out, it really doesn't take very long to do and is a pretty straight forward mod. I think building a steel flare that would bump out (like a more traditional steel flare) would be more difficult and time consuming.
If you go to a wrecking yard and run across an old 80s Dodge Omni, they have great factory flares that have been grafted onto just about every hotrod in existence. Check them out and let your mind wander. . . Come to think of it, it's the only decent thing about that whole car.
Two considerations I had was to (a) keep the factory profile of the fender arches (more round in the front and falls away gently at the rear) and (b) retain the factory fender lip profile. I could have done something different, but I like that tubbed, fat look it gets from the back. It actually makes the car appear a bit lower than it really is.
If you want the simplest way to widen rear fenders, get a set of fiberglass 914 GT rear fenders and modify the top to fit better on the type3 fender. They actually look pretty darned good and get you 3 full inches with minimal work. Building a car is not about doing minimal work though and that's why I keep modifying on an old car rather than buying a new one. . .
Does that make me "Green" in today's world?? (I just threw-up a little in my mouth ) _________________ Regards,

This morning I stopped by my buddies shop and removed the door panel blank off the infusion table. Should make a nice door panel when trimmed out and done the way I'm planning.

I just re-read your post and realize that I misunderstood what you were saying. If I understand now, your basic question was why spend all that time to modify the body? Why not just modify the fender?
The reason why is that the fender is just a skin with no structure of it's own; it's literally only a skin. A type3 relies on that bottom edge of the body and the area around the vents to give the structure and make it rigid. You could simply make the fender rigid and not modify the body, but you would also need to somehow seal the wheelhouse area and the whole bottom edge so your tires don't throw spray and mud into the inner fender and rust it all out from the inside. The vent area also needs to be seled from the rest of the fender in order to work properly. I think modifying the fender only would prove to be very, very time consuming and creat more issues that would have to then be resolved by adding more metal. Also you would have to do a lot more body work since all the strengthening would have to be welded to the fender skin that you see, thus warping it all in the process.
If I'm still not understanding what you were asking, please type more slowly so my aged brain can comprehend it better . _________________ Regards,

Driving clear across the whole state of Nevada yesterday....
Grass Valley to Salt Lake in one day.
14 hours in a bus!
We ended up in a ghetto hotel by the bus station.
I slept in the bus last night with the dog.
Woke up real early, kids and mom getting much needed rest, and I get to surf cars on my phone!
Went by Bonneville yesterday, and kept thinking of your pioneering work there, Nate.
Soooo,
Whatever happened to the 'Big Motor'??
And,
Show some o' that CF goodness?
I'm driving along, picturing some gutted-out doors lightened up,
With those window-hold straps and light pulls like the 2.7RS race cars...
Running flat out at like 147..

O.K., O.K.!!
I'm not quite ready to show everything at this point, but it does appear that you and I think alike. . .
The time lapse video was making one of the 4 blanks like this:
Classic 1X1 3K CF fabric:
I then used those to make these:
In another day or so, I should have everything rapped-up and installed for a few in-car shots of the finished product.
The motor is almost ready to go back in and get tuned. Just a ton of other stuff that has pulled me away from it. The dry sump upgrade will be for next year, but I know what I have to do there now.
I took it up to my favorite road to Artist Point on Friday. I had both josh & my wife with me and since my wife was there, we had to take it easy. So we coasted ALL THE WAY DOWN. 14+ miles with the engine off. Not much drive coming out of the corners, but we did hit speeds of 60+mph. Had fun!! _________________ Regards,

Almost a year after I began driving my car after the suspension fender mods, I finally have a mostly complete interior. Better late than never I guess
To keep the Porsche inspired theme going, I decided to make door panels reminiscent of the early 70s RS/RSR racers by deleting the metal door latch and replacing it with a light web strap and Porsche grommet.
Instead of leather covering like a Porsche, I opted for carbon fiber. I infused all the blanks at my buddy Jim's shop Left Coast Development LLC. Then traced out OEM panels and attached them with black oxide screws.
Simple, light weight and un-cluttered. Now I can look at something other than a skeleton door as I drive.
Clatter, you and I think alike. _________________ Regards,

Nice! i am doing panels in c/f as well, but I don't have the pre-inpreg version, so I have to get it nice and flat... mine isn't that shiny either! _________________ 64 No'back Speedster "Pearl"

I can make more sets, but I doubt many will like the price. If anyone wants a set, just PM me.

If you build them on a large piece of glass, they will be nice and shiny. You don't have to make them with vacuum, but the vacuum helps ensure a thin, bubble free product when you are finished.
Wax the glass with car wax and spray the gel coat. Then add your CF and squeegee in the resin. The tough part will be getting it bubble-free. _________________ Regards,
