Hi - Randy in Main.
Thanks for the suggestion. I have bought the bus from "old arnold" who, as well as trading vw's,also has a shop.
As we speak most of the work you mention is being done. I like the suggestion about the carb rebuild (I didnt think of that one, thank you) and i have also been told that the diaphram in the fuel pump should be replaced ?
I was just on the CIP1 website to see if they do a kit of the sort of items you suggest - rather than order them all seperately.
As we are flying over i dont want to bring tools over from England. - so i also need to put together a set for the trip. Any suggestions for mail order tool supplies ?
Thanks again, Martin |
Ron is a good man and will treat you fairly. I'm sure that he can put together a spare parts kit for you and maybe some essential tools as well.. (By the way, at one time ...before relocating to Colorado.... he owned over 750 VWs. )
Enjoy your trip on Route 66. |

Snow is possible in Tahoe, but buses are Good in the snow. You can throw chains on it if necessary. Should stop and see the Spruce Goose etc in McMinnville if you get that far North. _________________ http://s169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/mr_bojangles500/

Sure thing Robbo - but you have to be good at digging vehicles out of the snow, fixing breakdowns, babysitting and making/drinking tea !! Have i missed anything ? |

Iowegian, Thanks for your comment about Ron.
I,ve spoken to him a fair bit on the phone now, and i have to say he sounds like a very interesting guy. He has some great stories and you can tell he has a passion for VW. Im looking forward to meeting him in a few weeks - i have a feeling there are many more stories to be told !!

Living in COS, I've done the Route 66 run to LA in my bus a couple of times (out to the Classic in June). You WILL have a good time. There are local clubs in several of the cities you'll go through (including COS). Get contact info before you leave. I'm a big believer in AAA. Don't miss Oatman.....

Thanks HighAltitude and Sidbus, Oatman is definately on the list and I'm just waiting for membership details from AAA. It sounds like they are a very good source of information for all sorts of things.
Two weeks to go today !! Getting close now, just need to get some insurance sorted out for the bus.
One thing that we have been supprised to discover is that shipping to the UK is much cheaper from LA than San francisco ! Over $800 difference so far, so I think we might alter the end of the trip and drive back down to LA and fly home from there!
The work on the bus is coming along well, and we are working on a blog for anyone interested in following our exploits. Once up and running i'll put a link up here.
Thanks again everyone for your help and advice. |

Thanks Ned, its definately on the list. And LA looks favourite for shipping at the moment, coming in at almost $800 cheaper than San Francisco.
Things are coming together pretty well. Unfortunatley found out we can't join AAA as we are non resident. Its a shame but we have a big order of "breakdown supplies" en route from the bus depot and all the contact suggestions from you guys - so we are not too worried. The only big problem at the moment is insurance - but im sure we will get it sorted.
Cheers for now, Martin |

| If you plan on driving some of the route 66, be sure and check out the road conditions as some of that that I drove last year was worse than a dirrt road in Mexico. I thought my bus was gonna break. I was on it out inear Bagdad Cafe as it paralleld the I 40. |

That is just east of Barstow.
However Rt.66 is in good repair from Essex, California to Ludlow. The highlight of that stretch is Roy's in the remote ghost town of Amboy (and it is open with snacks, drinks, fuel [a bit high priced, but if you need it.......] and public restrooms.
