I decided I would put together a thread just to show the progress of my Sandwinder buggy build. It started out as a 61 pan with a 54 engine that was neglected in my yard. Last year I decided that I wanted to get into this thing and get it running. Turns out it was much more than I anticipated.

How it started:

Decided that 61 pan was shot and bought a 67 pan and had it shortened 14.5 inches:

I painted everything, new brakes and lines on all 4 corners, new shocks, new front beam, and some other stuff.

Took the Chevy adaptors off the old bug and mounted up these z28 rims..

Painted the Tranny:

Bought a donor 69 (autostick) simply for the engine (had a 009 and H30/31 installed):

Tore it down, cleaned it up. Bought a new flywheel, oil pump, and clutch kit:

Installed the Engine:

Put on the baja bumper (still needs paint):

Installed poly seats on manx mount sliders:

Test fit the body:

And thats where it stands right now. If you can see in the second to last picture the body has some blocks under the body. its holding the body off the transmission and the air cleaner. we have to do something about that. Im thinking small 2 inch lift maybe? who knows. I have an exhaust on the way, we're working on the roll bar, and hopefully the bumper will be powder coated soon. Its a slow process but i'm pretty happy with it. I really hope to have this thing on the road by summer Very Happy

I hope you know that you need to run the cylinder tin or you will over heat the engine and burn it up.

there was no cylinder tin on the 36 horse and it was fine. I have the cylinder tins for the 1500 painted up if i need to run it. just have to install it.

do you think its going to be a problem on a buggy with a relatively open engine "compartment"?

Necessary in Texas. I've never seen a buggy without tins.

Yes, you need to run the tin. Keep as much of it as you can. The rear of a buggy creates weird airflow and the engine is in sort of an air void when you are running at speed.

You're going to need more of a 'bow' in the clutch Bowden tube of it'll shake your fillings out when you let the clutch pedal out.

Just pack either end with washers until it looks like this...

Planned on using the old exhaust. It didn't have spaces for he preheat tubes to bolt to so I cut them off. Now, after having the exhaust sandblasted, it's full of holes and I need a new one. So I bought block off plates for the new exhaust and have to replace the intake eventually. Mark twice cut once, and don't jump the gun lol

You can cut washers to look like a "U" and push down on the bowden tube to put them on. I'd put them on the end that goes through the bracket on the tranny.
As far as the heat tubes, I wouldn't worry about them, but I would make a support to go from the bottom of the carb mounting stud down to a stud on the case. The carb with aircleaner is heavy, and right now it's only supported buy the manifold bolts at the ends. The throttle cable will put some stress on it, especially at full throttle. I would probably go down to the case stud directly behind the fuel pump, if not the fuel pump stud itself. This brace is something you will have to make yourself.
And yes you need the cylinder tin. As Q-dog said, run as much as you can.

I might be mistaken (and would love to be corrected) but I think the car will run like crap without those pre-heaters. Especially up here in the North East.

whitewalls - i like that plan about the U washers i was trying to figure out an easy way to get them on. And ill have to fab up a support for the carb. i didnt even think of it not having enough support.

jspbtown - i looked around on here before i cut them off and deemed it acceptable. from what i understand the majority of pre-heat tubes are clogged up anyway but, they help with cold starting and preventing icing of the intake. if i run into that problem ill have to buy a new intake. or cough up the cash for some dp heads and dual carbs Twisted Evil ( a kid can dream right!? )

I may have a solid SP intake with the pre-heat tubes if you would like it. I am in Western Mass so you could pick it up if you like.

i put three big washers in there and i could probably get one or two more in if necessary.

I personally would try to get a little more bow.

And I would get some sort of covering over that throttle cable.
