Man, how did I miss this thread...? World travel is the best as it is important for one to see what other people are up to and doing. Thanks to Martin and Sarah for doing this great trip and then allowing all of us to enjoy and wish we were there. And appreciation to MB and others for transferring f-book info for us that don't f-book.

This is like all Syncro/Vanagon TS posts in one, using a Syncro for what I believe it is intended. Also enjoy Martin's site with other trip details and Syncro tech stuff. Only thing I don't get, what the heck is that dash shot full of a mega-wire mess...yikes!

Please keep us posted as much as you can. I know internet connections can be difficult in that part of the world. Travel tip: try buying ball point pens and give out to the children in small villages; they might like that.

Again Thanks.

Hiya,

thanks for your answer... don't know how you could miss this thread, but I can imagine how. I opened a thread for this project myself, but it didn't get any attention at all. So I just ignored theSamba anf got on with my other Forums... then someone else opened up THIS thread and suddenly people seemed to notice Smile Thanx to mb we even have a live stream from facebook Smile))

Though I have to emphasize the fact, that this f-book page is public! You don't need to register, you can just look at it.

Try it... http://www.facebook.com/TravelTiger

The mess under the dash... don't know which shot you are talking about, but if you open the dash of a stock vanagon, it's already a mess. If you add more light, heating, radio, whatever else it will get even more messy Smile Looks cleaner now, though, as everything has been mounted to a back plate and the wires are tied together as much as possible. I just realized, that I want to change some of those things again to suit our needs better, so I will open it up yet again - upon return Smile

Thanks again,

.martin

No intended insults about the dash, just in awe that you got it all back together. Your Syncro seems very functional and very much up to your purposes. I got to get some of those fuel tanks. Worth a trip to Munich where it looks like they are made (?).

You are doing something important, don't know why your post didn't take off at first...most Americans don't seem to know much about world travel as Europeans do. Got your f-book link to work, good. javascript:emoticon('Very Happy')When you are out on the road as a traveler (not a tourist) do you feel more like a world citizen rather than just one of Germany?

Come to West Coast of US? You have a parking place at my house. Although I don't shop for my Syncro there, I live 15kms. from "GoWesty", a Vanagon parts supplier in this part of the world if you need anything. My preferred VanCafe is also just up Coastal Highway 1, lots of Syncros around this part of California.

Enjoy your day on the road and behind the wheel of your VW.

Hiya, I think you wouldn't need to go to Munich, as he'll ship worldwide. Just a very busy guy, but try contacting him via eMail and refer to Tigerbus... he'll know Smile His website should be http://www.syncro-werkstatt.de - you can see all the different options and variants for fuel/water tanks there.

Citizen... well... it has proven to be "good" to be German, rather than American - i can tell you that... Many people mistake us for Americans, because somehow the think the B-_US_ in our license plate refers to the states. When we tell them that we're not, it seems to be a slight relief... crazy world.

The US would be nice, but it's too expensive, we simply can't afford it on this trip. We'll get home completely broke anyway, so I don't see how we could possibly extends this trip to the US, sorry Smile GoWesty & VanCafé are know in Europe aswell...

Thanks,

.martin, Lhasa, Tibet

update from https://www.facebook.com/TravelTiger

......A few days more or less off grid... Mt. Everest Basecamp, more gravel and washboard you would have wanted: 2 flats within a few hours. The first one was pretty slow, the second to quick - sidewall damaged beyond repairablitity. Today we had both tires "repaired" with a hot iron, now we have two real spare tires.... Will try to buy a new one somewhere in China, since the 6th spare tire can now only serve as decorational item. Now that we had two (!) broken tires (which could not be repaired with worms) at the same time, we can only barey, veeeeery barely understand people mocking about our two (!) spare tires..... Smile .......

Hallo,

Thanks for the update. Looks like you continue having a lifelong experience that you will remember long after you both return to Germany.

Seems you are close to tracing Marco Polo's trek in 1300's...I wonder did you consider his trip alignment when you planned your itinerary?

Good driving.

Latest news relay from TigerBus f-book page.

Both front wheel bearings, both upper and lower balljoints, lower bushings of the front shocks... all that f*cked in Tibet! Two full days under the van - luckily, we had most of that stuff as spares and the rest came from Germany via FedEx Smile Thanks to Stefan from GMB, Volkmar and TK! Smile

(All the above parts had done around 40k miles when we left home, all good quality stuff...)

Yeah I'll tell ya, with all the manufacturing being moved to Germany these days the quality of parts has really suffered.
