hey guys, did some more work today and took some more pics
RUST
thats about the only holes
Under side - pretty solid
Dirty cabinet. this is why I took it out to clean
(mouse bedding in the bottom)
there was way more before i took this pic
of course I broke this thing off
the mice have been in the headliner!!!
Nasty glove box
the giant speaker covers that i took off the doors had no speakers in them! Thanks PO!!
Notchboy, I really dont know much about engines (remember im 16). All I know is that it turned over and it seems to be complete, but the PO said the reason why they let it sit is because a piston dropped or something. It was dumb i think the glued the fron floor mat to the ground because it was so hard to get off!!
And im positive the paint code from the mcode is L65k or whatever, ravenna green _________________ 1968 Karmann Ghia

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that in the camp stool where the yellow bucket was, there were some small trash bags that seemed to fit in the bucket. They are a little big though. Any of you guys seen these??

Yes, I've seen them. I think they are trash bags. Like this, but smaller.
They are sold under the Hefty name and others.

And this is an original can of what they provided you to blow up the spare into a full sized tire:

what? i've never seen that canister listed as "original equipment". looks like a generic fits-all you would get at a tire store (like perhaps a BF Goodrich store) that could be for any collapsible spare (not VW specific).
if they had a collapsible spare, i thought Westfalias came with these:

hey guys, worked on the interior a lot this past weekend, but only have a few photos. Anyway, when I took the sink cabinet out, I found traces of the original curtains, which are the exact same color as the ones that hazetguy sold me a few weeks back. They are like a light green/olive color. I'll get a pic soon. I finally know that this is the original curtain color for this westy.
A few random pics I took...
original plaid is turning out to be in awesome shape after shampooing, will get more pics soon
This has gotta be og paint.
Nasty stove top which I'm leaving out of the cabinet til i get it cleaned or buy a different one, its so incredibly nasty you can't even imagine _________________ 1968 Karmann Ghia

Haven't done a thing to the body yet, so I honestly don't know. I'm curious as well, but my first goal for this thing has been to rid it of all the stuff the mice left behind so it doesn't smell so bad. _________________ 1968 Karmann Ghia

Nice pics and nice find! I picked up a white 74 auto westy for the wife for $250, a bit more beat up than yours, and am going thru the engine right now in my garage. Maisy - that's the westys name- has the single full width seat and table with extension, an icebox instead of full fridge, no burners up top, no headbanger (just a metal piece covering the hinge for the hatch), and a poptop. I think the brochure said that in 74, the poptop westies did not come with a headbanger, but the tintops did.
Wish I had that spare tire and compressor.....I did manage to scrounge up a 4 legged blue/green plaid covered camp stool (which came with the base model westy - the deluxes got the box and yellow trash can like yours).
The auto trans in the 74-75 is a different model than 76-91? Basically the same but without the filter and with a bit different inside bits? VW improved on its weak points and evolved. I hear the earlier trans, 003 i think, is hard to rebuild, even for a shop, because the internal parts are nla. I found the gasket for the pan and the seal that keeps the final drive oil and ATF from mixing - I'm trying to service what i can without tearing into the guts of the trans.
Anyway, nice bus. _________________ "Spirit is the journey - body is the bus

Kamara, thanks. Yes the tin top westies only had the head banger closet, which is kind of weird because in the pop top version it looks too empty back there. I haven't dealt with the engine or trans in this thing at all, and this is my first automatic vw. All I can say is that it will be a learning experience. _________________ 1968 Karmann Ghia

Yeah sorry, been really busy lately. I got a lot of the bondo off the nose with a hammer. the thickest is over 1/4" I started taking off the pop top today to replace the nasty, smelly canvas!!! I've been continuing to remove the whole interior for cleaning. That's about all I've done, here are a few pics.
Rolled it out of the shop in this nice weather
original plaid
after a lot of cleaning.....
I plan to finish taking off the pop top and get it cleaned tomorrow, I dont know if I'll get any more done. _________________ 1968 Karmann Ghia

WOW!!! Looking good! other than the bondo. You do know I'm right across the river??? I've replaced our canvas before so if you want a hand, as getting the whole top off can be a chore. Let me know. I'm off work @ 3:00 M-F's and off on the weekends.... |

Ummmmmm................................................................................ not sure yet We'll have to dig deeper to see what condition its in. If worst comes to worst we"ll just weld in a new piece of metal for that nose area. _________________ 1968 Karmann Ghia
