1776 dual 40 webers. On my way home right now my bug had barely any power when giving it gas. I looked at the distributor and and I saw four sparks. Got a tune up about 3,000 miles ago. I need help because this my DD and need it by tomorrow morning |

Ok does the accelerator pumps squirt when you activate the linkage? Have you checked your idle jets for goop/junk/gunk? _________________ Aust. RHD 66 Type 1

Accelerator pumps are in the carbs? I pulled off my air filters and looked down them and activated the linkage and saw gas spray fine. Not sure how to check for gunk right now. It's late and have very little light to work with |

Ok your pumps are working, you may have a timing/ignition issue or a blocked idle jet or 2, are all the cylinders firing? _________________ Aust. RHD 66 Type 1

This isn't enough certainty.
Stand behind the car while someone else revs the engine a little. They should try to place a little load on the engine using the parkinig brake and chocks while slipping the clutch; it's a good idea to have the car in fourth gear for this while the clutch is slipped. Of course, the car should be only mildly revved, and this should be done only briefly; too much of it is obviously bad for the clutch.
Hold your hands behind the tailpipes (don't get burned!).
You should feel nice, even exhaust pulses. If one (or more) of the cylinders is missing, you will feel it. |

Get rid of that clear cap too. I know some people like them and they look cool but I and many have known of those going bad. They get brittle and can get hair line cracks you might not notice but cause problems. In my opinion they are junk, but thats only my opinion from my experience with them. (I used to roll with one). |

Even if you see spark in the cap, your wires could be bad, plugs could be bad. Many reason thats motor could bog, vacuum leaks, ignition problems, internal engine problems etc Is your carb linkage intact? |

instead of pulling the plugs, get a spare, plug it to the plug wires & check for spark. you may be running lean too, or flooding out. Do you smell gas when the car is running? |

3000 miles, its about time for a valve adjustment anyway. Might as well adjust the valves...loose valves can cause loss of power. |

Does the engine have a miss at idle?
A miss could be valves out of adjustment/bad plugs/bad wires/bad rotor button/bad ditributor cap/fouled plugs.
Check the point also.
My 67 would run fine at idle but as soon as I pulled out onto the road it would bog down and die. I took my fuel line off at both ends and blew air through the line. I also did a complete tune up. This fixed the problem.
If you distributor is not clamped tight it could have turned. I thought I had mine tight enough (snug but could turn for tuning) but it turned on me while driving.Set your timing marks pull the distributor cap and see if the rotor button is pointing to the number one cylinder. If not rotate the engine till the timing marks line up agian and recheck. The marks will line up two ways. In time or 180 degrees out of time. |
