|
|
So after a couple of years of Syncro lust, I finally pulled the trigger on an 87 Syncro Gl I found on CL in ID over the holiday. One owner with 91550 on the dial. He even had the original window sticker.
I picked it up at Spokane airport and drove it straight to Seattle for some quality time with Kirk and the gang at North Westy.
Before:
And then after some excellent service in record time from North Westy (about 2 days total to be exact), I was ready to roll!
TuneUp/Inspection
RMW bumpers plus grill guard
SA Grill kit with IPF bulbs
Big Brake kit
Stainless braided brake lines
Mercedes E- Class wheels and new rubber
ARB safari rack, steel with mesh floor
New drive line
New coolant pipes
New header pipe
A fresh undercoat and whole bunch of other stuff.
Needless to say, Kirk and the gang set me up right and made sure I was dialed. The only thing he did wrong was let me drive his Suby Syncro16. Now I'm in "desperate need" of an engine conversion.
A quick sunset on day one in between test drives.
Kirk putting one of the final touches on. Look at that precision decal installation!
We wasted no time putting it through the paces on the way down to Portland.
A quick stop in PDX and then off to SLC.
And here we are at some scenic lookout in the middle of nowhere. _________________ 87 Syncro

..and we're back. I forgot Picasa sucked so bad.
I was hoping to stick around PDX long enough to make a quick meet happen. Unfortunately we were slightly pressed for time and had to roll out sooner than we would have liked. Maybe next year when I'm back over there getting that engine swap! _________________ 87 Syncro

The 1/2 gallon gas can does look lonely on that big rack though. |

Goes to show ya how big that rack is...it's a 2.5 gallon. I figured I'd grab it just in case. My fuel gauge is off so I thought I'd buy a little insurance between Portland and SLC. _________________ 87 Syncro

Sweet ride before, epic ride after. Kirk is the man. Glad you got hooked up. Too bad you could not have held off until Sunday, would have loved to have seen it in person at our Lucky Lab Westravaganza.
Perhaps, if the stars align and I do not have to work, I will see it at Syncro Solstice in Moab this year.
That scenic lookout would appear to be right across the Snake river from Ontario, Oregon in Idaho..... _________________ Happiness=Portland, Oregon in the rearview mirror! |

Thank you all for the congrats. It's awesome. By far my favorite vehicle ever.
I drove it from Spokane to Seattle, then down to Portland and then over SLC. I'm having it shipped back to Boston from there. I would've loved to have made the rest of the drive across the country, but time would not allow it.
I also just ordered some Das Mule sliders and a Gary Lee rear ladder/bike rack/gas can holder for it.
I'm avoiding eye contact with my bank account for the foreseeable future. _________________ 87 Syncro

Boy howdy, do I know the feeling. You have a very solid base to start with and should not need to do too much for awhile but just keep it out of the salt and enjoy the ride. But, then again, thats why you had it undercoated right _________________ Happiness=Portland, Oregon in the rearview mirror! |

Nice ride. Congrats.
See you around B-town.

Very nice. It's cool that you could invest some $ in it right away to make it the way you want. Sometimes the purchase price makes that difficult and requires patience. Have you thought about tinting the back windows? _________________ 1989 Syncro Westy

Very nice van! Good pic. See your Vanagonitis did progress to Syncronitis. It appears to be very catchy. Envious. _________________ '09 2.5L Jetta 5 cylinder, 5 spd, super turbo, see thread in H2O Cooled Jetta, etc...

That's a major reason I got it and why I wanted the undercoating before it ever hit New England salt.

Coin was dropped, although I hadn't planned on dropping nearly as much as I did. The fact of the matter is that, there just aren't that many specialty shops in the Northeast. So to be able to roll into one shop with all of the appropriate resources and parts available, and have everything done in short time was valuable to me.
Plus, it put this Syncro a lot closer to where I want it to be practically over night.

Windows will be tinted before the summer hits, for sure. I also have a Thule T2 bike rack with 4 holders to plug into it. That should look pretty impressive! I basically need to get about 6-8 bikes on this thing at one time.

Not sure if all Syncros came with the decals, I'm pretty sure not all did. _________________ 87 Syncro
