I'm glad you are fixing this. On the bright side at least you didn't have a fancy paint job ruined.

Other than the 67 bus that I am still collecting parts for. This is my only driver. So it has to be fixed.

I had about 2 hours free today. So I was able to get the carburetor rebuilt. I also went over to the storage unit and cleaned up the first piston and cylinder. Put the second piston and cylinder in the cleaner.

I just need to order the engine gasket kit and I can start rebuilding the engine. I am close enough that I can probably get the long block built before the other parts come back from European Automotive Machine.

Here are the pictures of the before and after of the cleaned and rebuilt carburetor.

I am looking at this car to replace the body on my burned up car.

It states that it is a 1970, but I see vents behind the rear quarter window. So is it a 1970 or not?

Well I got a lot done today. I even took a break to do a job interview for some web design work. I do 2 jobs -- in home health care, and I run my own web design company.

Anyway, I got the following completed. before the sun light was just not enough for me to continue.

Here's today's progress:

Got the distributor shim installed (only had one, lost the other one).
Installed the distributor (correctly, with the drive shaft aligned right).
Got the rotor pointing in the correct position.
installed the missing dowel pin for the right side of the case main bearing.
Crankshaft in (dots are aligned right).
Camshaft (dot is aligned between the crankshaft dots).
    Installed the cam plug.
Case halves put together with the hardware install and torqued to spec.
    Oil screen installed.
Got the oil pump soaking (needed to clean up the old sealant).

I have a crazy day tomorrow. So I won't be back there till Saturday. Getting closer.

I just got the replacement rear window and cal look seal. The seal seems to be way to long for the window. The package has part # 113.845.521.k/ca did I get the wrong seal?

Could the replacement window be the wrong one. Was told it came out of a 66. I have a 70.

from WW part #113845521D

"rear windshield, 1965-1971 Bug, 1971 Bug through chassis # 1112799842 standard and Super Beetles"

So the glass should be right, but looks like the rubber is wrong. When i search your part number, it looks like 72-79 sedan.

Hope you can return it to whoever you bought it from.

I misplaced the fuel hard line that comes through the tin to the fuel pump. It connects the soft line from the frame horn to the fuel pump.

Does anyone know the part number or name of this piece of the fuel system?

Well I got the new rear window seal today. Took all of 5 minutes to unpack it and install it onto the window.

Fits like a glove.

Then it took from 4:02pm till 4:33pm to install the window by myself.

I am so very close to getting Dieter back on the road.

Nice! Glad I could help. The right seal definitely makes a difference.

For the fuel hard line:

http://toplineparts.com/vw-products/fuel-line-metal-for-engine-compartment-15-0452.html

or

http://vwparts.aircooled.net/Steel-Fuel-Line-Engine-Compartment-113-127-521A-p/113-127-521a.htm

I got the one from Topline and although it is very long, it actually worked out better and I could route it around the intake manifold and cover it with rubber tubing for protection and heat soak.

OK I got the new fuel line. Question is how does it route around the fan shroud. It came pre bent but I think I need to bend it a little more. Just looks funny.

Also which way does it go, one end of the bends is longer that the other end.

I found this pic in the gallery that shows the fuel line mounted to the triple wire holder on the fan shroud.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

The line only needs to extend a few cm or inches forward of the firewall tin. Just enough to push on a hose and hose clamp (stock install may not have had a clamp but I always add one). Seems like the shorter end should be towards the transmission, but check the fit to make sure it will pass through the firewall tin with enough left to mount a hose. If the line extends too far forward it becomes "floppy" and harder to push on a hose while laying on your back under the car.

I bought the same one and couldn't figure it out either? Eh?

I ended up carefully checking and re-using the custom bent line the car came with. It wasn't even close to the shape of the pre-bent new one.

Chochobeef gave you two sites for the correct fuel line: Topline and Aircooled. If you compare their fuel line to yours, you'll see a big difference.

Buy one from Topline or Aircooled. Even then you'll have to tweek it a bit; but you won't have to do any major re-shaping, like on the one you purchased.

I got the line from topline.

Talked with someone on the phone since their website wouldn't let me purchase just that. They had a minimum order of $10.00. I just need that hard line.

I'll see if I can get a picture of what I did. I don't remember having to shape mine all that much. I'll make a reminder to post some pictures.
