I don't know where he found them, but he did restore them. My car came sans headlights, so I consider myself lucky that he got his hands on them. |
Ditto the comments posted about Rico's work - you will surely be happy with the headlights.
Question: how long does Rico's restoration usually take? I shipped a pair for my 50 on Jan 24, 2014- Rico confirmed receipt on Feb 24 and indicated a 6 month approximate processing time. My emails of Oct 29, Nov 21, and Dec 1 have so far gone unanswered. I highly respect the obvious quality of his work and I can be patient with his workload. But it sure would be good to have an update on the status of my headlights - just anxious to move on with the 50.
Thanks for anything someone can share.

I'm afraid I won't be much help.....Rico had my headlights in his personal inventory (I didn't send him any to be restored), so I'm not sure how long it takes him to do a restoration. |

Hi Max
Please post a photo of your carb top that shows the banjo bolt and also post a photo of the fuel pump top. I'm trying to see what you are trying to do but must "SEE" what you have.
This I know for sure: 1) The W.West comes with a 6mm fuel line going into the fuel pump and 10mm banjo ends at the carbs. 2) The original Okrasa lines come with a 3" section of 6mm
copper line that goes into the fuel pump and has 8mm dia. copper line going to each carburetor with 12mm banjo ends.
I want to see what you are going to ACTUALLY use on the engine PLEASE... |
Here are some pics of the set up:
The following shows the WW supplied fuel line....right for the fuel pump, but wrong for the carbs.
Here's the other fuel line that I have. This one has the correct banjo fitting for the carbs, but the fuel line size is wrong for the 36hp fuel pump....if I'd have used the 25hp fuel pump, this fuel line set up would have worked.
Basically, I'm using a later 36hp fuel pump with the integral fuel screen, which, as stated by nlorntson, requires a 6mm line. The carb tops require the larger 12mm banjo ends.
So, it sounds like option two is what I need.
I don't want to put the 25hp fuel pump onto this engine, since I'm trying to keep the original 25hp engine intact. |

Joe, I think this is his engine. Click on the picture and it is quite large:

I think we can put this to bed. Joe (Mr. Okrasa) is going to build me a line that fits the 36hp pump on one end and the carbs on the other.
Just to be clear, when Joe sent me the long block with the fuel line, I said at the time that I was trying to keep it looking like a 25HP engine. So, the fuel line he sent me was correct for a 25HP fuel pump. I later decided to buy a rebuilt pump from Ed Fall, who only had 36hp pumps on hand. Plus, I liked the idea of the built in filter screen.
Then, when I ordered another fuel line from WW to fit the 36hp fuel pump, I thought wrongly that all of the carbs for their Okrasa kits would have the same sized banjo fitting.
Anyway, I didn't want to leave the impression that Mr. Okrasa or WW didn't know what they were doing. It was me that didn't know what they were doing.
Lastly, thanks Joe for helping me out. |

Mr. Okrasa turned the fuel line around quickly & I installed it yesterday morning. Went right in without a hitch....

A little progress today....installed the hood latch knob and installed/wired the sempahore switch and starter button. Get a few things done each day, and pretty soon you have a car.

Made some progress on the interior installation over the weekend.....
That last picture is the one that prompted my question about threshold or sill plates. The carpet kit seems to imply that you need one, since the carpet trim stops along the threshold. I'll ask the question in the other thread, just to avoid the diversion in this one. |

BTW, see my post over here.....

.....for my question on the threshold/sill plates being factory installed or after market add ons. It's not posted in the Split forum, so I was concerned that responses could be limited. |

There is supposed to be a metal strip attached to the heater channel that the carpet slides under. That is the way the factory sent out the cars. Now there are accessory threshold plates as well. _________________ New Vintage Specialist.

Okay, thanks, that's what I needed to know. Unfortunately, I didn't know to ask that question before this point in the restoration. Adding that strip now would be tricky. Looks like I'll be buying a threshold plate. |

Thanks, Johan. All of the interior components were purchased from West Coast Classic VW Restoration in California. The carpet color is brown, which was the consensus as the original color in a Bordeaux Red car. |

The threshold plates still depend on the carpet retaining strip to be there as seen in this picture:
If your heater channels do not have this strip, your door has nothing on the bottom to seal up against and the carpet cannot be crimped in place along the door opening.
Your best option might be to find one, paint it and use panel bonding adhesive to attach it. |

Yeah, I see what you mean. I was thinking it was purely cosmetic, but clearly there's a structural component. Bummer! Is anyone aware of a vendor that sells that carpet retaining strip? |

The search function is a hairy bitch to some it seems.
Well, here :

I´m sure he can send you some without the holes to weld through if really it is an option for you to glue them on now after the car is painted. _________________ Master of my domain! |

I'm pretty sure I couldn't have built this car without knowing how the search function works. Next time, I'll be more clear that I'm looking for a recommendation. Actually, next time, don't reply if you're unable to do it without the condescension. |

Yes, a bit sensitive it seems.
