|
|
I'm making a chart to show what wheels fit a Super Beetle in relation to the stock wheels. I'm trying to figure this out for myself and it's a pain in the ass, so hopefully this may help others down the line. Take a look and let me know if anything looks off. I'm trying to fit the XXR wheels in 15x7 et38 in the front and 15x8 et0 in the back.
I need a little more info to complete the chart:
1- Anyone know at what backspacing the stock springs get in the way and Topline MAXX struts or Sport+ springs are to be used?
2- Anyone know exactly where the edge of the fender lies?
3- Can anyone confirm at what backspacing a 15" wheel may hit the balljoint?
Thanks,
Tim

Nice graphic! But keep in mind '71-'73 supers have the "three bolt" struts where the '74+ have "two bolt" struts. The effect is that you have a wider track in front with a '74+ I can't remember my offset specs but otherwise I'd post them. I've got 16x6 fuchs up front on topline disc brakes in case anyone knows what those are as far as offset goes. Mine fit well with a bit of rubbing (on the settings the topline maxx struts came at). _________________ http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=366056 - My '73 Super Build. 2332cc, 16" Fuchs |

Stock Super Beetle rims are 4.5" et41.
Just for reference here is where the ball joint is with 7" et40 rims
That's with discs though, drums may be a few mm further in.
Also those are 17" diameter rims, for 15" you would need to trim off the excess thread from the bottom of the ball joint shaft. |

So your wheels have a backspacing of 5.625" roughly and those balljoints look right about flush with the edge of your wheels.

I'll adjust the chart with 4.5" stock wheels.
Thanks. |

The Bentley has a good write-up on the different stock wheel sizes/offsets.
Up to March '72, the stock wheels were 4", 40mm offset. In March '72 the stock wheel went to 4.5", 34mm offset.
'74 Supers had the 4.5", 41mm offset wheel. _________________ Scott

Great... Thanks!
Anybody know the distance from the front of the hub to the strut spring? I roughed it in, but a more exact measurement around where the wheel would be would be great. I would measure my own car, but it's in storage for the winter

this may help you visualize things as well.... just remember, there are 2.54cm in 1" if you need to convert.

one of the best tools my wife bought me, was a Percy's Wheelrite. http://www.percyshp.com/WheelRite.html it allows you to adjust it to any number of diameters, widths, offsets etc - bolt it onto your hub/drum - and spin it to see if things hit or come close.

OK will the 4.5 x 15 & ET 41 fit a 73 standard? Not a super? _________________ Volkswagen: We tune what we drive.
