I made a simular post over on the type 3 group but here it is for you guys. I have a KoobleKar that was build on special order for the person I purchased it from on a cut up Type 3 Squareback chassis. My question is if anyone knows if the early type 181 (VW Thing) rear axle and transmission will fit the suspension/torsion bars? The Squareback chassis is from 1969. Thanks Harry

Depends on how early the squareback. You have swing axle arms and independent axle arms. If you are talking early Thing transmission with swing axles you will have gear reduction boxes. This is also a different swing arm than a type 1 or 3 I think.

I installed a later transmission case in a 1959 type 2 bus and had to modify a bit for the nose cone. People more knowledgeable than I would probably change the nose cone.

Thanks for the reply. I am looking at a transmission that has the axle with the gear boxes on the ends. It is out of a German Army Kuebel. The chassis I have must be an early 69 as it has the swing arms also look the same. I have not had the chance to measure that yet. Harry

Any transmission that old will be geared way down in the gear reduction boses for the smaller engine. You could have the ring and pinion changed if you are running a decent engine. Gear reduction boxes were not reducing as much at the end of the 60's. I think a 67 was 1 to 1.
GRB's do howl a bit on the highway but you do get some decent clearance with them. I am guessing a set of type 2 swing plates will be needed, unless you can find a set from a early thing.
