Hello All! I recently became the proud owner of a 66 Fastback that I purchased from a gentleman here on the Samba! I had been a regular on the site for awhile "window shopping" until I found a fasty that hit me like a ton of bricks! Long story short, had her shipped from Oregon to Texas and I can't wait to start tinkering on her! She is totally unmolested, still a 6 volt, original engine, interior etc... She runs....when she wants to, but I have a long road ahead of me! She needs brake work (frozen caliper), so I figured I would start my project by pulling out the front beam and replacing all kinds of goodies, along with calipers and rotors. I am thinking of doing drop spindles, and I might as well clean out the fuel tank and fuel line while it is out right? This might seem like a "bass ackwards" place to start, but I already have plans of attack in my head! Anyways, feel free to comment, I welcome all comments, and am sure I will be annoying people on here very soon! Smile

I am replacing what needs to be replaced so I don't burst into flames 20 feet from my driveway!

basically fuel lines need to be solid, as well as the brakes. from there, drive it and find out what it needs.

Actually, buying parts while they're available isn't a bad idea whether you need them right now or not... Wink

That will be next on the list! The previous owner did a minor tune up, but it is leaking a little fuel either from the pump, or one of the carbs. I also want to track down any fuel filters that may be in the engine bay! I too prefer not char-broil my new baby right off the bat!

Read up on properly Locktite- ing and securing your fuel lines.

Welcome to The Samba!
Before you get to "tinkering", I suggest you do a LOT of reading.
Then you won't be ridiculed for saying stuff like "totally unmolested", then immediately talking about your molestation plans. Confused
"pulling out the front beam", "going with drop spindles", is not something typically done to a T3, as it has an adjustable beam. Ya want low? Check out some of these threads/posts.

http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=540982&highlight=lower
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=529873&highlight=lower
But if you REALLY want to downgrade your car to a T1 beam, Rolling Eyes do a search on "conversion" or T1 beam.
Again, welcome & enjoy your new project! Smile

Hey Cooled Head! I didn't mean pulling out the front beam and putting in a T1 beam or anything, just pulling it out and freshening it up, then putting it back in. I have been reading tons, trust me, but my knowledge at this point is just at the tip of the iceberg, that's why I have you wonderful folks to help me along on my journey! Smile

Well having gone thru a few of these cars over the years, it's actually easier to replace the ball joints (they bolt on) and the tie rod ends while the beam is still on the car.
Bert3 had some 2" drop spindles for sale a few years ago, and I think he did a second run on them too. Contact him to see IF he still has some. Otherwise you could try and see IF anybody is selling their set in the classifieds. And one more thing is that Oldspeed does welded drop spindles (Bert3's are machined from billet) too. I think he's an advertiser here on the Samba, but I'm not sure.

Replace ALL of the fuel hose with 1/4 inch SAE hose, versus the German hose. This is because the German hose doesn't like ethanol, which is becoming found more often than regular gas. Move the fuel filter to either under the fuel tank, or alongside the trans (2 best places I've found.

Since you have a 66, get a Blue Bentley. Or at a minimum, a Haynes and a brown Bentley. They'll pay for themselves quick enough, and when we start referencing you to something, it'll probably be the Bentley we'll send you to.

You might alo want to spend a little time on this site.

It'll probably give you a little extra info that you might need down the road.
I hope this helps.

Sweet another Texas Type 3! The TX Classic is right around the corner, hope to see the fasty there.

BTW- we like to pick on fastbacks here, it's not personal so don't take offense. Wink

Thanks for the info Bobnotch! That is good information to know! I kind of want to take it out just to clean everything up, I am kind of anal in that regard, but I could always replace said parts THEN take it out. I have been looking at a kit that comes with new calipers, rotors, AND drop spindles, but I need to do some more research before laying down hard earned bucks! When I got the car the previous owner included the blue bently as a surprise, and what a surprise it was! I have been reading and hightlighting like a madman!!! Shocked I plan on getting Muir's book as well, and already have the Haynes.

Typ3nut, pictures coming very soon, promise!

Hey vdubspeed shack! You got the gears in my mind turning, the kit I saw is on cb performance. Its a disc brake kit with drop spindles for 66 and later sedans and ghia's. I havent called to verify but it is a 4 bolt design, the link is below:

That won't work. Type 3 spindles are totally different. As already mentioned, the only sources for drop spindles are BerT3's or Oldspeed's welded ones.

Like Bent said, that won't work, as t-1 spindles don't fit onto the type 3 beam. The kit might be cheap enough to buy though. Otherwise, I'd just look for another kit. It is for a 4 lug though. In your case, keep in mind that you need the small inner bearing and race combo (used up to mid 68 ), that's correct for 67 and earlier cars (type 3s always had roller bearings).

BTW, you & the PO (previous owner) think you have a frozen caliper. It is more than likely an old, internally collapsed rubber brake hose. BTDT
