Yes, there's oil in there. Just fill the trans normally. Oil flows through the front main and pinion shaft bearings.
Be sure to really clean out any disintegrated ball socket bits that you find. They will do major damage to a bearing if they get into it. Raise the rear (clutch end) of the tranny such that oil flows out through the bearings to flush them out. Note: will be messy... _________________ '71 panel - stock

I'm just curious how Issac determined what the appropriate torque for the various fasteners he had to remove was? _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

You hang in there Isaac and don`t let the flaming wankers bother you. It may seem they don`t have much else to look forward to. |

Issac,
I was wondering the same thing, as I am thinking about replacing the input shaft seal. I've never opened one up before.
I am 39. Just ignore the negative people on here. They have nothing better to do than make fun of people who don't know as much as they do about VW's.
I'd love to be around when they try to hook up a multinational investment bank to a German exchange with traders in Dublin who demand real time connectivity. |

Only because there are so many books and resources that you can use. You're buying a 35 year old car, and it's going to need maintenance and most likely repairs. If you're not up to doing them, take it to a shop. If you have the ability to do them yourself, buy a goddamn Bentley manual. It helps immensely with most repairs, and is usually a better option than asking on this site.
If you have a question that is so specific that it can't be answered with the manual, by all means, ask away. But otherwise, crack open the book and get reading. _________________ 1978 Transporter, 2.0L FI |

The fact that people ask questions on this site only help to add value to it, so the people that own can get advertising dollars.

Like I said kid, don't listen to the negative BS on here. Ask as many question as you want! Bullies are everywhere. |

Isaac what you need to be careful of here are those who try to convince you there are trolls in the woods here who will eat you if you listen to VW on how to fix things. Go ahead and read the books when you get them. The only trolls here are the ones who want to burn books. _________________ Steve aka Merlin the Wrench

Isaac, as you can see from these examples. Reading comprehension is very important. |

Maybe not in Chicago(?), but lotsa VW good resources around Roseville, CA; that's the Sacramento area. Also a bunch of really helpful VW owners, some of whom hang out at TS.
Hang in there, Isaacbmxer. As was suggested, make the assembly spotlessly clean; crud in there will accelerate wear and possibly bind up your shifting as well. Inspect & service (as needed) the entire shift linkage mechanism as well, before declaring the process finished. Obviously, it all has to work right. Best to ya'; welcome to VW bay fun. _________________ Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups.

Sorry - the pain from the recent surgery makes it hard to concentrate sometimes - did you have surgery too? Maybe your sentences would read better as ... "from these examples, reading comprehension".... .
I think, but could be wrong, that you needed a comma instead of a period. I am so glad I am not alone in making grammar mistakes.
Hang in there Isaac - we hope you are smiling with us. _________________ Steve aka Merlin the Wrench
