Well, here's my 1966 Beetle. I drive it 12-20 miles every day. It's never really broken down on me, and has won many "impromptu" races. Rolling Eyes

I got it when I was 15, in a straight trade for my first car that I'd gotten when I was 11, a 1973 VW camper. I'd gotten this bus for free from the original owner, a really cool old hippie, who'd gone on several cross country road trips with it.

When I first got it, it looked like a cheesy, kinda hideous trailer-queen/car-show cruiser.

Since then, I've stripped off all the ugly plastic and tin accessories.

But it still had that ugly cheapo quietpack muffler hanging out underneath.

So I got a very nice Empi Euro GT muffler.

If you were to look under the decklid you'd find a dual Solex 1776cc engine, to which I've recently done a wiring tuck, and color matched every part in there that isn't either black or chrome.

As of now, I'm saving up cash and preparing to lower the car around 2.5 inches, repainting the wheels (putting white where there's silver now) and replacing the damaged rear bumper and mismatched door window seals.

And now for a couple of really good quality shots on and near my favorite road.

I'd replace that chrome should for a oem one before I dropped it. Sounds like it's a nice car. So keep it nice by ditching the shroud!

It's not made correctly, and can burn your motor up.

Just a quick comment - if you like the sound of that muffler, get the TriMill version when the Empi rots out. Its built very well.

And as far as the trailer queen look - I would have kept it that way, but still built the hell out of the engine and gone with a hideaway. Would have been a major sleeper if you are racing........ Kind of like my stock 65 - if the 1200 ever goes south, I plan on throwing a 1914 in it, widened stock wheels for a little more tire width, but still keep the whitewalls. Would be kind of neat blowing past a ricer in a "stock" bug. LOL

Love the new look! Simple and racy from over-accessorized and cheesy. The 2.5 inch drop will be perfect.

If you want to lose the "cheesy", I'd suggest pulling that electricians tape off the headlights.

JFTR, I think it looked better before you improved it.

It's yours, do with it as you wish, and enjoy it.

Safe journeys.

Thanks for the advice, I'll keep that muffler in mind!

And I'm actually planning making it somewhat of a sleeper, and giving it an old school road-racer, "rally bug" look. Basically, like this version of Herbie, but different style and color stripe, and different numbers (and obviously, no ragtop).

sorry to use a Herbie reference, guys, but I can't find a good picture of another car that's that style.

Also, I forgot to mention, this car was originally an L87 pearl white w/ pigalle (red) interior.
Now I don't know about the red interior, but it'll definitely be returning to it's original color within the next several years.

I'd though about getting real guards, but couldn't find ones that I liked.

So what type are you referring to?

I've only ever seen the steel mesh ones, and the Porsche grills.

ISP makes a great clone of the Porsche covers, that fit over the glass! Not badly priced either....

I agree with the comments on the shroud. Although I'd say to hold off on stripes! Stripes on a bug to me is no bueno. Looks good now, will look better with a drop!

I was thinking stripes like this

But I'm always looking for better ideas, and haven't really settled on exactly what I'm going to do for the exterior, just that it'll be something like a 1960's race beetle

i was going for a similar look (although way too low for a real racer)... here's what mine looks like so far...

i was thinking of some stripes too, but will wait... also, might get some of the racing number magnets that i can take on and off for fun... i've got gravel guards too, but they don't seem to fit right...

might raise it back up at some point to an actual race stance...

It's not to loud at low revs, but if you floor it, the thing screams. It's pretty great.

I really like your car bjoy, not really my favorite wheels, but they look good with that color combo. And those fog lights on the front bumper are killer!
