What the hell are those cylinders from? ? It looks like part air compressor, part VW. And whats that distributor from and what are those 3 other square things in the engine bay? To put it simply, What the hell am I looking at?

Not real far obviously.

This engine currently powers my Squareback, the pictures are as it was when I bought it.

The seller said it had engine problems, "it lost a lot of power and started backfiring right after I tuned it up..."

Think

A Type 1 header on a type 3?
I think he cut and rewelded the flanges to angle it downward so it would fit.

Ok... i've been staring at this contraption for quite some time, and I have a wild theory regarding WHAT is it :

I think it's sort of ELECTRIC engine. Inside these cilinders are electromagnets that push some kind of pistons down.
That would explain the strange looking power electronics around the engine bay, also why yhis engine has no alternator/generator ( it already has a lot of batteryes ) .

The manifolds conecting the cylinders are a system to recuperate some energy when the piston moves upwards , it pushes air to help pushing down it's "pair" piston, which is beginning it's " power stroke".

Well.... such an extreme looking engine deserves a wild theory like that Very Happy

i've had that picture saved for years and always wondered who knew about it.

interesting theory about it being electric. i see a coil and some sort of pressure gauge (maybe volt meter?)

I was searching for the ultimate abortion, the engine that had been spraypainted chrome... Can't find it anywhere but I did find this worthy contribution...

LOL, my favorite so far. Can't believe someone did that.

I would say he believes in the saying: " Chrome won't get you home"

I've seen the exact same treatment done in another car with spray on chrome too.
Fan belt and all

I'm sure they thought it would look good in their head.
