I'd say that's the sort of thing that happens because of neglect. If people don't pay attention to their fuel lines/connections and regularly renew them, they DESERVE to have bad things happen out of neglect.

And that picture above has to be one of the most derp-filled exaggerated analogies I've seen in some time. Laughing

A fuel filter in the engine bay does not a bastard engine make, IMO.

exactly , in your opinion, in my opinion the smart thing to do is to take risk out of the equation period... opinions... simple enough. I just hope my statements arn't taken as a "YOUR STUPID CAUSE YOU DON'T BELIEVE WHAT I BELIEVE!" kind of statement... not my intention at all

No offense taken at all. And I definitely don't recommend a filter placed like that in the least, as it's not hard at all to relocate it elsewhere, like inline between the hard line in the tunnel and the hard line going to the pump.

Actually, I'd take sides on the more critical position. EVERY type 1 fuel pump I think already has a filter in it. Are the guys putting $3.00 POS American brand named Chinese filters on a German high quality car really so smart that one should be paying them for such poor work? Do you suppose any of these morons even bother to check whether the existing fuel pump filter or the sock in the tank is plugged?
Having brought a few back from 20 year lay overs, perhaps I'm a little more sensitive to these burning issues? (sorry about the pun).
Keep up the rant.
Really the only good way to add a filter is just under the tank and it needs to be BIG, like one from a 75-79 bus, but no 12mm fitting, of course like the late bus.

[Admin note: Non-VW images are deleted from the gallery]

You realize what those chrome trimmed slots on the rear apron/ fenders are right? Slots for the wheelie bars.
Waht that car really needs is one of those industrial convex mirrors mounted pretty low just above the front bumper looking toward the pavement. So he can see where he is going when all switches are UP. Either that or a back up camera under the floor pan by the pedals.
But the bigger issue is: anybody that would take a small window RHD sedan, cut its roof off and then put on LATE MODEL TAIL LIGHTS!! Has a screw loose anyway. Also, previous poster is right, Each turbo sees: bang-bang-wait-wait.
A 911 each bank has 240 degree even firing. Just a little more refined thing for the extra money!

No need for reverse lights... just use the reflection of every damn thing else around it...

EVERY type 1 pump?

If these pumps (photo below) have a filter in them, it certainly isn't user serviceable, and you would never really know if it was plugging up or not.

Not knowing if these have a filter in them or not, it comes down to two cases:
* If they DO have an internal filter- are you going to change $20 pumps instead of a separate disposable $3 inline filter before it?
* If they DON'T have an internal filter like the original pump did, then... I guess that justifies having an additional filter. Wink

So in either case, with this style of pump, it still makes sense to run a separate in-line filter before the pump.

Well, I guess that shows what I didn't know! And will never know cause I always just rebuild pumps, so to keep the original pump in the car.
Every time so far I needed to it has worked. to rebuild them. And OE pumps are out there too, so does it really make sense to save $10 buying Chinese or other questionable quality, then add a filter that adds fire danger and then say it had to be done that way?
But I did say, put the filter underneath, just where the tank outlet is.
And my favorite filter is actually a NAPA metal version Of an early 60's Ford filter.
Thanks for the pics of those. I DID NOT REALIZE they existed. Now I know what I don't want!

Consider yourself lucky! Every car I have bought has come with that non-serviceable style.

I don't think they are questionable quality though. Even very reputable places sell them- Wolfsburg West, Aircooled.net, West Coast Metric, etc, etc. They're good pumps... just throw-aways when they eventually wear out. Sad

As already pointed out it was only the original Pierburg pumps that had filters and some of the earlier bolt together style Brosal ones but even in the original pumps the filters are only rock catchers.
The paper filters in a $3 plastic inline one do a better job than them.

Anyway keeping the ball rolling,
Type 3 with a back yard turbo on Oz ebay and yes, that really is an upright singleport bug oil cooler with no air flow through it.....
