I've heard a few different people say they ran Buggys or anything with a wide open engine bay with no tin like that.
I feel like it could be fine as long as you are moving and it's not too hot out but it's GOT to reduce engine life dramatically.

Nice! I'll have to play around with alternate carbs one day, once I build a good engine for each of my bugs, and a couple spares from used parts.

Oh, it'll function well enough for a surprisingly long time!
I didn't say it wouldn't run, I just noted all the mods/hacks done, some of which affect longevity.
(I didn't spot the hose-barb-ception at first glance, glossed right over it XD)
These are tough little relatively simple engines, after all.
So, what sort of carb do you have on there, anyhow? Now that we know it's yours. I'm curious!
