It has the automatic device still in the engine bay, but it is a manual now.

That thing on the side is not a clutch servo valve.
Nothing to do with an automatic, its for the throttle positioner system.

Don't reckon that car was ever auto, it doesnt have the holes in the side of the engine bay for the ATF and servo tanks.

Bet it runs like a doozy with the vac cap missing of the carb retard port and the case breather hose hooked the the shroud charcoal canister port.

Now, I bet a Bus/KG oil bath worked really well upside down in a bug.....

I'm not forgetting that one. Who could? Laughing

The black one has the pleated part of the air cleaner painted. So it isn't just cosmetic, it's paint with a functional impact. To me, that gives it an edge - even though the red one is more eye-gouging to look at. Shocked

That engine is BAD ASS. Should be in the bad ass engines thread, not abortion. Confused I see zeniths, full flow, 010, the only thing wrong is the air cleaner is missing.

And a Battery ground cable bolted to the exhaust stud, bet that works well Laughing

Actually looks like that is a Left side fuel injected head on the right side, can see the temp sender port.

I don't understand the struts that clamp to the torsion bar housing that look a bit like IRS control arms. Any ideas?

That is puzzling.. I would think they would be in a bind as the axles swing through their arc

superior control bars, a period accessory to improve swing axles' handling. There's some explanation on their function in this thread:

OK that makes sense .. they have an oversized bushed hole on the end that allows for some degree of rotation .. and if the mounting point is close to the centerline of the pivot of the axle shaft it would move in a similar arc
