Well I just put in a order to Pacific Customs for the last few things I need and also ordred a set of SCAT 1.25 rockers off here so I now will have everything except rods...
CB is still out of stock on the 5.4 unitech rods... so I hope its not much longer. |
CB has been out of stock of those rods for over a year now.
I looked at them for my build last March and ended up just using my stock rods again.
You might just want to source some from somewhere else. _________________

Some updates...
Engine is running pretty good, I plan to get a Bosch 010 distributor to finish it up. I got it down to one very small oil drip, I did an oil change and didn't go to the full line on the dipstick; I only put in 4 qts vs 5 the first time. It reads just a little below the middle mark.
I had to pull the pedals due to the flange breaking.. I thought it was the 50 year old mount failure but in fact it was from my own fault! I made a double arm on the gas pedal and the original pin wasn’t long enough so I used a ground down bolt, well the head stuck out a little too far on the part that butts up to the frame and was putting pressure on the mount when the mount was bolted up.... So 11 dollars off the classifieds and I was back in business. I also welded a bolt in for the clutch cable....
Then trying to put it back in the front mounting nut stripped out... luckily I was able to get the welder in there and welded a nut on the back side.
You can see in one of the pics the bolt head sticking out, this was before I fixed it...
I also started on a rear brake/ turn/tail center led bar and a reverse light, also moved the plate down to the bumper ...
Aslo you can see I moved the oil filter up to the bumper, no need to absorb heat off the exhaust...

So I went after my gas tank issues. I was having some small leaks when filling up all the way. I found it was probably 90% due to a leaking fuel sender seal. But I also found some pinhole leaks where I drilled the mounting holes. To fix it I nothced the holes out and welded them closed.
After a lot of pressure checking with soapy water and shop air. I think its pretty much sealed... I coated it with 5 coats of Master series silver, so I hope its sealed for good now....
I aslo reinstalled the sender with some sealer betweent the gasket and on the bolt threads.
Its been sitting for a week to let the MS fully cure so I will see how it works this weekend. _________________ Buggy Build > http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=499786

Great build Pallen. Your thread was just suggested to me for the fuel door. (I had to go thru the whole thing tho!!!) Great stuff and timing is everything!
I want to do the same fuel door. Joe Cool mentioned it can be an issue if you "spill" so I guess I will just have to be careful. I love the clean look.
I just cleaned out my tank and am going to seal the inside. Yours is already done but if for some reason you have to take it out again, I might suggest coating the inside. There are products like "Crème" and "Red Coat" that I use and have had in Hot Rod and Harley tanks for over 20 years. They keep the tank from rusting and plug pin holes. I have welded several tanks for people and always use it. I use Red Coat lately.
Again, excellent build and thank you for all the pix and info!!!!!!!!

You sound absolutely devastated, like the kid who just finished flushing his pet goldfish with tears and immediately turns with a smile and asks for a puppy. Hope I can take a hit like that with a smile when it happens to me. _________________ Gary

Welp transmission broke... I guess a 60 year old stock trans can only take so many launches from a 2L engine...
Any guesses on what broke?
It rolls, spinning sound when clutch is out...
Off to build a transmission shopping list..... |
Mine lasted 9 miles with my 2276. I now PREACH to those who want big engines, build the close ratio tranny first....... Cheaper that way too!! _________________ 62 vert

Nice build, pallen!
I would recommend, however, that you find another routing path to protect the oil lines to the filter. They look all too happy to find something to snag on...
