Sounds like most of them are pretty rough. Although pretty rough as a daily driver is a good project car. 15000 pesos is equivalent to about 1200 dollars right now, so you could probably offer the owners $1500 and call it a day. My next project isn't going to be a VW, though. I want a finned 1950s car (don't know what kind yet). _________________ *ASE Recertified Master Automotive Tech*

The point isn't that they stopped building them, that happened in 2003. The point is that there is a 10 year term on Vocho taxis in Mexico, and now that 10 years is up, Mexican government is giving a 15,000 peso incentive to get the Vocho taxis off the road. The OP's point is that there will be another source for vehicles and parts. But one would have to go purchase them from the actual owner, because if it is purchased by the Mexican government, the cars get crushed. _________________ *ASE Recertified Master Automotive Tech*

I'm going to sound like a snob but i guess that happens to everyone now and then. Who really cares about them anyway? Let them get crushed, I volunteer to push the button. Only good will come of it. US bugs will go up in price, the remaining mexi-beetles will go up in price, and the one's crushed live on as Dodge trucks . _________________ Fatchicks: Daily drivers, donor cars, collectibles. This may sound stupid, but there are so few left! I live in Illinois and it's scarce picking. I know out in California, parts grow on trees, there is a VW shop on every corner and every barn has one stashed in it for the past 30 years.
Even if they are just parts cars, grab a few!

You'd spend more time, money, and effort hauling parts home than it would be worth. If you're worried about genuine parts, drop a note to Antonio Trejo. He has a lot full of old taxis that he uses for parts. _________________ West Virginia State Board of Education v. Barnette, 319 U.S. 624 (1943) |

Man, you mustn't have been to Mexico City recently.
First thing these guys do is rip out the passenger seat so fares can get in the car with packages and have a place to store them.
I wonder what they did with all the surplus seats?
They usually tie a rope or the passenger seat belt to the armrest so they can pull the door closed after you get in. Add to that the horrible traffic in Mexico City means the cars are all beat up with dents and HARD driving.
On top of all that, think of the paint job! Yuck. |

Please--without prejudice or complaint will someone tell us truthfully why you hard-liners are so adamant against these Mexi-Bugs??? I have heard it for years around here!! I know they are newer and not as desirable as 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s or even 70s and 80s bugs but they are bugs none the less and kinda historic (VW wise)--I don't get you guys!
I have seen as little as humps coming back together as a car that is totally fawned over yet with as much care, or less, one of these more "whole" cars can be road worthy again.
Is it purely expense and hassle that drives the mind set?? What gives?? |

For me it's not just because they are "new", it's because they are Super Beetles.
A 72 Super and a 01 Super are equally repulsive in my book. |

Simple, the fewer there are the more they are worth. If you want them to get the attention they deserve, crush a few hundred thousand. _________________ Fatchicks: Daily drivers, donor cars, collectibles. What can't they do? |

Look in my gallery at my 68, it's the red car with white wheels. It's been my loyal daily driver and is mostly original except for the 1600DP the PO installed. That 1600DP is a brand new long block with 10k on it. I have driven that car from Las Vegas Nevada to Seattle Washington without a problem.
If I went to sell it tomorrow I would be lucky to get 2000 dollars for it. Go on Craig's list and do a search for cars that cost 2000 dollars. I wish people felt differently much more than you my friend _________________ Fatchicks: Daily drivers, donor cars, collectibles. What can't they do? |
