Why keep the 36,trans or beam? They're not original to the car...

I don't have to keep anything except for the body! I like the oval ragtop...that is why the pan switch option was in there.

I got the pan switch idea from here:
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=313100&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0

Though I am leaning towards option 2 with just upgrading everything I have now.

Even though they are not numbers matching, if and when you do sell the car the new owner may want to go back to "original" state and put back the split case trans and 36 engine. If you dont have the room to store dont just junk them as the early parts are getting hard to find and more people are going back to stock

Hate to be so negative, but you asked, so don't get mad.

I'm certainly no expert, but I say get rid of those hideous wheels and leave the 36 engine/tranny alone. Nothing wrong with a 36HP. Where are all these people going in such a hurry? It's a VW beetle!

Oh, and go back to 6 volt, (yes, I'm prejudiced), because I'm sure the PO that put those hideous wheels on probably converted it to 12 volt. Surprised he/she didn't also put in one piece windows. Guess you bought it just in time.

I'm not against logical improvements, but try not to ruin it. It'll have more value the closer to stock you keep it. Just my .02.

I have never owned a big stroker. I did have a stock 62 that never went far from home. I had a 1835 that I ran for years everywhere. I now have a 1600 in a 56' and I hate it. You sound like a little go fast is in you, my opinion is stock stuff is not going to make you smile at the end of the day.

I would upgrade to more power. That's what I've done recently by installing a judson s.charger. I get less MPG but the power is worth it.Wolf.West makes this Okrasa kit. A comparable power adder to the Judson.

I wish I dyno'd my stock 36 before the WW Okrasa kit.

I'm pretty much convinced that it just drinks more fuel for the same performance.

Without the Okrasa grind on the crank, I think the kit is basically worthless.

....except the repo Abarth exhaust... That thing sounds bad ass.

The amount of confusion, cost's and funds the road will lead to will amount to that of just ordering a 1915 with 125 HP and zero difference. Do it right and get sumthin you will be happy with... And order a 6 pack o' 4 Peaks 8th Street Ale to boot, it's much more satisfying... I built a 36 horse to match and it cost twice as much as the last two 1915's... Food for thought...

I think I am going to just leave the 36 with split case and just finish the interior...then upgrade the motor/tranny later.

How much is a perfectly running motor and split case worth anyway? motor is a 55, tranny is a 57. Smile

Worth? Really depends. There is currently a running 36 FS in the classifieds for $450. Been there for awhile. Another had been up for the same price and sold for much less. Here the problem - while running, the actual condition is unknown. You can compression test, check for slop in the crank, but actual condition? You could luck out and someone may buy simply because they happen to be looking of that month case. Likelihood? Not very. Add to that you are probably looking at a local sale as packing & shipping could exceed the cost of the engine sale price.

As for splitcase $100-150 or less. Same issues, same deal likely local sale.

Problem with storage is that depending on where and how long, can actually lead to deterioration.
