Some things to check, as I don't know what is there and what isn't for you to look at.:

Fuel filler neck... 80mm (doubled in size for 53).
Lock button added to vent windows.
Chrome plated ash tray handle.
Adjustable door striker plates.
8 leaves in each torsion bar tube.

Check the ash tray. It should be zwitter-style but with a chrome handle. If it's still there, don't leave it on the car! Those are hard to find.

Also, a starter button on the dash would indicate a '53.

under the hood behind where the spare tire would be.

Another one on the drive tunnel under the back seat by the inspection / service plate.

Get those numbers and then line them up on VIN database under the technical drop down in the above right side of the Samba banner section.

All vent windows had a lock button up to 64, so I don't see how that helps.

The chassis number is the best. If it can't be read, look for a starter button (hole) to the left of the speedo. If no button/hole, it's a 54.

That site is full of many errors copied from other sources, plus they've added plenty of their own. IOW, don't quote them.

Its easier to look at flipped over.
I bet its a later oval and someone installed hearts. Notice how high the tail light sits on the fender which means likely a 60s or repop rear fender. Also I think I see an exhaust cut-out.
Check to see if the engine lid spring is still there and take a picture of it.

as was previously mentioned, the starter button hole is a dead giveaway.
