I have an '02 eurovan weekender that I use quite a bit for kayak fishing trips. Since I usually have a kayak on top, I rarely pop the top. I sleep below. In fact, I even removed half the top bed so I can have more headroom in the van.

One problem I would really like to solve is large quantity water storage. When I am camping out I don't always have access to running water. I usually just fill up as many containers as I can find before I go. But they just clutter up the van and it's usually not enough.

This may be kind of crazy, but I was thinking I could use the extra headspace I gained by not having the top bed for water storage. Perhaps building a removable platform that rests the same as the bed did, but instead holds large quantity of water.

The platform isn't the problem...it's the water. I was thinking something like a camelback bladder, but huge. Does such a thing exist? I would then run a hose with a closeable valve from it. I could use it for drinking water, dishwashing, and even quick showers if it was big enough. Gravity would provide the pressure. I'd obviously need to be super extra careful not to puncture it.

Anyone improvised a large-quantity water storage scheme?

I've seen companies that make custom bladders for home rain water collection. I'm sure one of those could make a custom one for you. Possibly a small size may be around that would work for you.

Don't think it would be a smart idea to put a large quanity of water that high up. It will change your whole center of gravity and easier to tip over. Then there's the hammer effect to deal with when coming to a quick stop.

You are better off using smaller containers (no more than 5gal) and stack them on the floor. Once at your campsite you can put them outside.

Just how much water do you need? 2 gallons per day should be enough. 45 gallons of water going to weigh near 360lbs.

375lbs of water on board is a significant amount of extra weight (+~15%) to carry in an already underpowered vehicle.

Don't get hung up on the weight! Ok, 375 lbs, I glean you travel alone, a full size adult companion could be 200 lbs or more + / - . There's your water weight right there!!
I do agree not to put it up high on the roof. Keep it low, get a Plastic tank or two, mount it under the floor and call it good. Lots of space under there if memory serves me (it's been a few years since I was under one).... If not, find a hidden place inside to put the tank/s.
