Started on the headliner. Used the WW stuff, but to make it more correct I asked my wife to stitch the pieces together like they did in the factory.
I also put together three of the pop outs using OG frames and latches. I am trying to use as much of the original stuff as possible.

Super Samba member Dan let me come buy and check out this beast and let me tell you the pictures only tell half the story. This bus is amazing the paint is near perfect(new paint scares me)looks really good. Headliner is going in and Dans attention to detail is top notch.
Cant wait to see this finished.
Thanks for all the tips tricks on glass rubber Dan.
Dan did allow me to take a few pictures as long as I put them on the Samba and not spacebook.
Super Model Dan him self

Putting this bus together is proving to be a test of my Sherlock Holmes skills since the visual references are rare on this sucker and it was already dismantled when I got it. I am relying on the few pics I have seen of Ronnie Chase's '62 SO-22 Mosaic and the one period brochure that is floating around. It is my goal to do it as original as possible so if anyone following this thread sees something incorrect please let me know.
I have all the original panels for the bus and one thing I noticed was how nice of shape they were in considering the age. What I didn't notice is that all the panels with the exception of the front door panels and kicks were covered in 8mm plastic. I noticed the long panels had some residual plastic on the bottom so I assumed it was there to protect from the wood of the rear seats, but after I took the panels out of the bubble wrap Cameron had so diligently wrapped them in I noticed that several of the panels were either completely covered line an old lady's couch, or there was residual scraps left indicating they were at one point covered, which explains the great shape the panels were in.
Here you an see fragments of the plastic on the long panel:
The other thing I discovered is that Westfalia had replaced the typical standard headliner covered panels with painted panels and then covered them with plastic. You can see the metal tabs used to attach the upper part of the lower luggage area panels.
Here is a cargo door panels showing evidence of having been covered:
Here is the right quarter interior panel in which the original plastic was mostly intact.
Here is one of the long panel armrests showing that it was mounted over the protective plastic as was the chrome trim.
The next issue was trying to figure out what Westfalia did for flooring in the luggage area. On the SO-33 they did the marble mat i think, but looking at my '59 SO-23 I saw a different screw pattern that what existed on the metal tray of the '62 SO-22. I then compared the pattern to my '58 standard PG/SG and the screw pattern looked the same. The only wrench in the works was the presence of about 11 flat top carriage bolts. Someone (Nick I think) speculated there were in place to hold the rear cabinets down, but there were no holes in the base of the cabinets. Measuring the gap between the top of the bolts and the deck of the luggage tray and then measuring my original hardboard luggage tray cover in my '58 showed that it was the same measurement. What sealed the deal was finding a fragment of hardboard trapped under one of the bolts and upon removal of the bolts discovering that the hardware was standard indicating it was a PO hack probably to hpld the board down? Anyway, I went ahead and made a pattern, bought some hardboard at Home Depot and went to ACE to have the color matched to the lower side panels. Here is the result with headliner and plastic covered panels in place:
Luckily all the cabinets except one were present with the bus. The veneer is in really good shape the cooler cabinet being the roughest. I was not sure what sort of finish was on it, but a little research on the site revealed that it was shellac, so I did a 50/50 blend of alcohol and shellac and channeled Homer Fornsby and cleaned up and refinished the rear cabinets and hardware. The interior of the cooler is amazingly complete and clean.
The Mosaic is designed for rapid removal and is held in with clips and clamps. Here is where I am stuck. There is a clip here on the cooler cabinet but there is not receiver for it in the box of parts that came with the bus. Anyone know what the receiver would look like?
]
On the rear of the cooler/storage cabinet assembly there are three holes indicating something is missing. Plus there is no attachment point for the rear of the assembly. Any idea of what should be here?:

The cooler attaches via a U clip that screws to the body. The same one used to lock in the so-42 ice box. Mine is missing also. _________________ Looking for white cabinets for a '61 camper

Some more pictures. I have all the cabinets done ad installed, including the hanging cabinet and closet door that I Jeff Powers stres and finish to match my original cabinets.
You can also see the rubber mat under the seats. The mat, headliner and forementioned piece are the only non original components in th interior. so far.
In this picture you can see how the rear bench and closet are held into place. I need to fabricate the clamp.

Well, sort of, the white "trim" is actually painted on. Hard to notice unless you look closely. _________________ Go Reds! Smash state!

Dan, Did I actually nail the color or did you refinish my "patina'd" finish. Its almost scary close in the pics.
Also could you post some pics of the door cab with the doors closed? _________________ I build complete Westy Style camping interiors check them out here > www.rjcampers.com

I'll post some later this week with the door cab closed Jeff. I must confess, I did put one layer of amber shellac over them just to get the same gloss. If I did not shoot my mouth off no one would know, you did that good of a job and just based from some pictures I sent you of the cabinets before they were even refinished. Excellent work, sir! _________________ Go Reds! Smash state!

Maurice, the plan is to have this beast at KQ in April, where that cooler will have a nice chunk of dry ice in it and as much IPA as I can fit in it. Needless to say it will not be on the cruise. _________________ Go Reds! Smash state!

Blech Noticed I haven't updated this thread in nearly a month!
I will post some pictures soon, interior is near done, but I need to know what the bungee curtain cords looked like for a early '60s SO-22/33. It looks like they are white? Maybe some speckling in them? I am looking at stuff online but want to get as close as possible.
On another note, I ordered a sisal mat today and will have a guy locally cut and bind it and hopefully install the table ring. _________________ Go Reds! Smash state!

Dan, I'm not positive but I think I might have some original bungee curtain cords in my garage. I will check later tonight and send you a PM. |
