My 1971 superbeetle won't idle it is also had to start. I cleaned the carb and is still the same. When i get it started it will fast idle and stay running if you pump the gas, but when i let it idle on its own it always stalls. I don't know what to do.

Hey, I had the same problem last year and everyone told me it was a vacuum leak. There's lots of info on this forum about it, I checked everything until someone told me to check my intake head bolts and sure enough one was loose but its was loose in the head. I had to pull the motor and drill and oversize tap the head and a new gasket...bingo problem solved. But there is so much more you can check.

Which carb do you have? Model number should be on the left side.

Your idle problem sounds like 90% air to fuel ratio (carb adjustment) & 10% everything else. If this just started, I'd look at:
1) Poor vacuum @ carb (too much or too little)
2) Leaking intake (broken, cracked, etc.
3) Leaking gasket at the head(s) or loose intake nuts
4) Bad carb to manifold gasket or loose carb
5) Busted vacuum advance diaphragm on distributor
I'm sure someone has told you before to get some WD-40 and spray a little on all gaskets and connections at the carb to manifold flange and intake meeting points to the head, etc. You'll have to idle the car up enough to barely stay running for this test, and the engine will rev higher if there is excess intake around any of these points
Another way to do it is to invite your buddy over who smokes. With the engine off, ask him to slowly blow a big mouthful of smoke down the throat of the carburetor - may take 3 or 4 times. You should not see that smoke at any of these mating surfaces - maybe from the tail pipes since a couple of exhaust valves are most likely open.

I don't know what carb you have but you might try adjusting the idle mixture and idle speed screws if applicable.

Make sure the wire to your idle cutoff solinoid didn't fall off. Happened to me the other day. It will run but won't idle. But a vac leak or loose carb is prolly the answer.
