Okay all,
I am trying to install 3 point non-retractable seat belts into my 1964 vw beetle. My question is this, where is the hole located for the shoulder strap? Is it on the B-pillar, or is it level with the top of the seat? Any ideas?!?!? _________________ John

I want to install RETRACTABLE belts. Where is the hole for those?
Up on the pillar? I don't see a higher hole in the above pic.

What you see is what you get on the 64.. Do not know about other years..
No higher seatbelt holes than the ones pictured.. I guess you could cut and weld in your own - - |

| Another thing to remember is that in 1964 the over the shoulder seatbelts weren't standard equipment...seatbelts probably weren't standard equipment. There may not be a hole for the higher up shoulder harnesses until about 1968 or 69 when they had to be standard. I know my '69 had over the shoulder harnesses that bolted in right above the pop-out hinge but I haven't checked to see if my '65 has the holes or not. I kind of doubt it does. |

Not that I've installed a retractable one myself, but I did install the non-retractable three point type on my 65 vert, and my 62 has the upper mount point on the "B" pillar as well for a shoulder belt.
It seems to me the retractor mechanism for a retractable three-point ought to attach at the bottom of the "B" pillar, with a loop for the shoulder belt at the higher "B" attachment point. It won't feel quite as comfortable as a modern three-point belt because the shoulder belt will be going straight back over your shoulder instead of up the way they do now. But that's what the upper "B" attachment point was for. |

| I was wondering if anyone had any ideas about how to install 3-point seatbelts (shoulder belt) into the rear seating of a Beetle convertible? Anyone ever attempt this? |

Three point mounting for the back & front on my 64.
I think they moved the attachment point hole up higher for the 1965 model. There's a picture in the 1965 owner's manual with it up higher on the pillar. I used to have a 65 -- I didn't have 3 point belts in that car but I remember the plug was higher. |

I know in my 64 with the 3 point belts, they don't stay on my shoulders for crap... The only way they stay on is if I super-tighten them, then I feel like I am strapped in a ride at Disneyland.
Most of the time its just a lap-belt with an extra part across my midsection. _________________ 64 Sunroof Bug, 68 Bug, 73 Super 'Vert, 01 Dodge 1500, 00 Subaru Outback, 46 Dodge 1-Ton, 68 Plymouth Roadrunner |

If I may.
This is the backseat of my '63. I have the three point belts from Wolfsburg West and the instructions say to attach the lap belt mount to the body-to-chasis bolt (to the left of the un-attached seatbelt you see sitting there.)
The bolt that is there is too short to reach when the belt and washer on on there, and the indented space around the bolt is to small to really fit the metal piece in it.
My question is... Can I attach the lap belt mount to the backseat backrest bolt? Is it strong enough to hold? _________________ .,/[__]\,.

Not trying to resurrect this thread, but I would not use the backrest bolt to attach a seat belt. Way too small, and it is not structural. It would just rip out. I would trim the jute back and get a longer bolt at any hardware store. That big chassis bolt may offer actual protection, the small backrest bolt will not. _________________ Present:
