Nice bug.A thread worth keeping an eye on.We're on the same stage of restoration.I am about to remove the body and chassis too.Is that a pop up sunroof? I have one.But it doesn't fit.The PO cut a hole on the roof.I wouldn't mind buying a sunroof that doesn't pop up.Just want something to cover that damn hole.

Good luck. Very Happy

Yeah, the original owner put it in. I'm going to keep it I actually like it. I'm just worried about putting in the headliner with it.

Count me as another 69 owner! And I got mine pretty much exactly the same way you got yours! - (dad bought it new in 69 and gave it to me last year.) I have started a restoration on mine as well, and am slowly but surely figuring out how this whole car comes apart. But I won't hijack your thread with pics. Smile

Keep up the good work and keep us informed of the progress.

Also 37 years old with a '69 I got when I was 15. See my gallery for pics of stuff you mentioned: shaved dash, Watson's StreetWorks wiring, body off resto. Have fun! You came to the right place for VW knowledge.

So I'll chime in and say I too fit within the age bracket for this "in" crowd (I am 36)...and while I do not have my first bug that I bought when I was 16 (An Iberian Red 1971 Super), I picked up a nice 1969 Royal Red Bug a few weeks ago and I'm about 1/2 done with my "body off" restoration as paint will be shot for the second time this Saturday. I'll post a thread about it soon. If I can find it, I'll see if I can scan the picture of my first bug for y'all to laugh at. Laughing

My original color was royal red as well- unfortunately it was repainted after the engine fire it had, and they didn't match the red correctly- looks almost more purple now. Its a shame cause the underside of the trunk lid, and the interior are all still original and look almost untouched.

Looks like we have a nice weekend in store for us out here in Nevada this weekend. My end of the weekend goals are to have the body off of the pan. Tomorrow I plan on getting rid of all the wiring, gas tank and getting everything ready to pull it off. I'll keep you all posted.

By the way, if anyone want's to buy the Weber 44 that is on the engine now, let me know.

Well, between my daughter's high school softball tournament out of town and my other daughters volleyball tournament in town, I still managed to get the engine, gas tank and all of the body mount bolts taken out today.

Tomorrow I am building my frame and will have the body off the pan.

I'll post pics tomorrow.

What a productive weekend. I set out with a set of goals in mind and I achieved them. Keep in mind that I am no way any kind of mechanic or anything. I'm doing all of this with the help of you guys and others. I've also done this with no help at all except for my 5 year old nephew Brock which you will see below.

Cold beer to start the project!!!

Today I was able to get the glass all of the glass out, headliner removed and got the engine on the stand in the garage.

Goal for the end of the weekend is to have the body ready for media blasting...that's whenever I can find someone to do it and have the pan ready for all of the dirty work. I'll post some more pics on Sunday.

March Madness took up some of my time today, but Sunday, the most important tourney that is going on right now will take up my time. Nevada and Stanford each host an NIT game.

Got all of the glass taken out and moved the body lower on the frames. All of the inner door hardware has been taken out too.

I tried to pull the doors off, but was having trouble getting that done. I'll work on that a bit more tomorrow.

Weather shut me down earlier that I wanted.

I'm another 69 owner, got a 69 'vert. You can find photos in my gallery

I spent two years with bad heater channels and lost of other body work. Lots of love and hard work will make it beautiful.

Jason,
there is a tool available from Harbor Freight to help loosen the screws holding the doors in place - an Impact screw driver - http://www.harborfreight.com/7-piece-reversible-impact-driver-set-93481.html, just hit it with a hammer to loosen the screw. Worked well on my doors, but you don't really have to remove the doors for paint, just take all of the removable parts off.
When my car was painted I had the doors re-installed.

Yes, they are blue dots, the same ones that you use to see on all the hot rods. I'm going to put 67 tail lights on with the LED lights from Airkewld though.
They're not perfect but far superior to those low grade Technostalgia versions.
