Jason,
there is a tool available from Harbor Freight to help loosen the screws holding the doors in place - an Impact screw driver - http://www.harborfreight.com/7-piece-reversible-impact-driver-set-93481.html, just hit it with a hammer to loosen the screw. Worked well on my doors, but you don't really have to remove the doors for paint, just take all of the removable parts off.
When my car was painted I had the doors re-installed.
I just picked up a #4 Phillips driver from there and put it in my rachet. No worries!

They're not perfect but far superior to those low grade Technostalgia versions.

The seats are from an 84 ford escort, one of my stupid moves I did as a kid. I'll be putting low back seats in it now that I'm older.

Just giving you guys a quick update. Still working on my bug, just at a little slower pace. I'm the President of our local Little League and that has been taking tons of my time.

I do plan on taking advantage of the www.airkewld.com Grand Opening sale this weekend. Get 10% off your order using the code GRAND12 when you check out.

As always, I'll update you with any new stuff at the end of the weekend. Stay tuned.

PostPosted: Fri Mar 30, 2012 8:09 pm    Post subject: My Engine Rebuild Grades Reply with quote

In one of the biggest mistakes that I've made while doing my bug in the past was I got in a hurry on the engine.

About 10 years ago, I decided to rebuild my engine on my own because I couldn't get anybody to help. Realizing now that I'm older and a tiny bit more mature, I decided to take my long block to a professional VW mechanic so he could take it apart, check everything and basically rebuild it again for me.

He agreed to grade me on my work, today, I pretty much found out what I probably already knew. I got A's on a few things, but got F's on the majority of the rebuild. Overall, he gave me a D...then he told me the only reason it wasn't an F was because I tackled the project on my own.

He will be completely finished with it next week and it will be awesome to take the road with confidence. I had planned on completing this whole restore on my own, but somewhere along the line, I think I got smart and decided to seek a professional's help on areas that I'm not fully confident in.

Once again, thanks again for reading my progress updates. I wish I could have took some pics today but I didn't even think about it.

Special thanks to Leo's VW Repair in Fallon, NV.

If you don't mind me asking, how much did your engine guy charge you for the work he did and also what all did he do. I'm thinking of getting a spare engine to swap with the original when this one gives up the ghost. Then I can rebuild the original for later. I'm also thinking of getting another trans too. You can never have enough spares. Smile

I haven't gotten the final bill for it all. Today I picked up $79 in parts for them. They said after it was all said and done, it should be around $300 for everything, which is very cheap insurance to me.

The engine probably had a total of 100 miles on it from when I put it together. Mack, the mechanic said some parts of it looks like it could have had 50K on it. One of the big things was that the Distributor Drive Gear was forced in and caused brass shavings to rattle around in the engine.

Just wanted to update you all a bit. Little League has stolen almost all of my time lately. I have still been working on my bug, mostly the engine. I'll post some more pics for you all on Sunday.

Nice!

I am in the same boat as you are with no garage.

Funny as your '69 is same color as my '70. ( Blue over original white )

As I was looking for all of my other pics, I realized that I didn't take a lot of pics of my Engine Tin project, so I'll just share my Heater Box Restoration.

Completed, welded a new bracket on the bottom, patched all holes and cleaned up with a grinder. Used 2000 degree primer to paint the boxes and I'm pretty happy with the results.

I've basically done the same thing to all of the engine tin, but instead of the 2000 degree primer, I used regular primer and hammered finish black spray paint on them.

Here is the entire album

Well, I managed to find a little bit of time yesterday to put the engine together. Here are my latest pics to share.

Hoping I didn't make a mistake painting my heater boxes black. Please give me your opinions on this. I primed with 2000 degree primer followed by 500 degree engine enamel. Here are the pics.

For some reason my black pic didn't upload to photobucket. As soon as I turn my phone on, I'll upload it.

Color won't matter one way or another. I just hope your temperature rating on the paint is high enough for the exhaust flanges. I really don't know just how hot they get, but I've been told its much hotter that then engine, especially after shutting it off.

Thanks, I was actually thinking about going back to just the primer. I'm quite sure it gets hotter than 500 degrees.

if you do that, are you using a sealer primer? If not it won't be sealed against moisture and will rust out on you almost as fast as bare metal.

It was not sealed, it was just primer. If there isn't going to be a problem leaving them black then I will. I've put so much time into those heater boxes already.

My point is the primer is rated for the correct temperature; I don't think the paint is. The paint would seal, regardless of color, but the heat may burn it off and then they will rust. Primer alone will rust. If you leave it as is, check it regularly after you've run the engine to make sure the paint stays intact around the flanges.

I'll just keep it like it is and adjust if I have to. It's going to be a daily driver anyways. Thanks for the help.

Here are the boxes with the black paint.
