|
|
I tore my motor down in October to make a repair and got lazy (no more story is needed on that part). I have installed the motor again and went to start my car up and noticed gas under the motor, at first I thought it was the floats stuck in my DRLA 45's so I pulled them open and they seemed fine. I put them back on and kicked the key over and checked for leaks (I have an electric pump low pressure same pump I had before with no leak) and I notice the leaks came from the back side of my carbs (yes both of them) at the throttle valve spindle.
So I pulled the carbs off and the bearing was rusted up and a part of the plastic seal was dried up and fell out of the bearing. Not trying to sound dim or anything but has anyone else every seen this? Can I just find a new set of bearings and replace them on both carbs or while the motor was apart did something go terribly wrong with my carbs while they sat? Any help would be appreciated. Oh, and I am not seeing where or how gas would leak from that area, I was not aware that there was a bearing that could seal up and area that has fuel in it and keep it from leaking. |

| You may be suffering from dellorto drip combined with ethanol gas. Carburetor vehicles don't sit well for long periods. The ethanol attracts moisture, the gas evaporates out the float bowl, then you have corrosion. Best case your rubber parts dry up and you get trash plugging jets. Bearings are 607-2rs |

| I run pure gas in all of my vehicles. Alcohol is for drinking not burning. |

| And that means what exactly? I have been searching around and found a discussion about the bearing allowing a leak and have track down sealed bearings locally so should I try that or am I hosed? |

The dell drip is caused by a lead seal working loose and allowing the fuel to leak out of the float bowl and onto the throttle plates, it must be fixed. The bearings are another thing to replace on top of that. It's just the convenient route for the fuel to run out at the moment.
A.C.E, or Harneys carburator clinic can get you fixed up. _________________ http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/manuals/jim_martin_engine_build.php

They are called lead plugs by most.
Harney makes threaded copper replacements. Dont know about
the other guys.
If you were very skilled and intimately familiar with the internal
design of the carb, you could probably fix it yourself.
I have not devoted myself that much to carbs, I send them to
TN for rebuilds. |
