I would say just start wrenching. Good luck on the retrofit. _________________ J.C.

I was just gonna say that I put a Westy bed in my Vanagon GL. No sink or fridge as I would never use them. I cook outside the van. But the bed... oh a must have install. You should post a picture of your rig.

Hints, depend on your goals. The just start wrenching hint above is likely the best. Also, a big hint, is to:
a) take apart as little as possible.
b) put fasteners back when ever you can so you know where they go.
The kitchen comes out as a cabinet, so don't go taking stuff off of it.
You'll find it is bolted to the cabinet next to it.
You'll notice once the kitchen is loose, you can tip it.
Oh ya, kitchen cabinet comes out first and last to go back in.
You work your way towards the back of the van.
Once the kitchen is loose, pull it out and carefully remove connections.
Take pictures!
I'd pop out the big bed seat next, then work on the cabinets.
You should find the water tank under the seat in that model, I believe.
The next huge task after the little cabinet is the BIG rear cabinet.
You want to take out the overhead before the BIG rear cabinet.
LOTS of fasteners holding that puppy up.
Look to the Bentley for "hints" as it doesn't always have everything or will show stuff you don't have. Use the Bentley as a guide.
It's is gonna take you many hours and there are lots of parts. Bag and tag and document.
If you have propane, take that stuff loose first, too, btw......
This should be enough information over load for now....ask more questions later...... _________________ "Use the SEARCH, Luke" But first visit the Vanagon FAQ!

Guess I'm bringing up an old topic.. but I have a question for you!
I have a z bed (wolfsburg edition so a little narrower than reg gl) and want to put in a westy bed to give me more room for storage w/o having to move everything before and after folding out bed, etc.
My bed is about 60"-61" wide and from what I'm reading the westy bed is around 46" wide. So that will give me a little over a foot of storage (wide) as I won't be putting in cabinetry.
Is it a simple exchange or are there lots of modifications involved? Not sure how the seat back will be totally supported not touching both walls..
Also, nice to meet you yesterday, Van Wilder. _________________ 1987.5 wolfsburg hardtop

You would have to make a new base for it though. Nice meeting you yesterday also. _________________ 1987 Syncro (converted 2WD auto)

Thanks for this! Just talked to the guy. He said it's from a riviera (or said the guy who sold it to him). He said it's supposedly the same dimensions as a westy bed but he's working and can't measure. Any of you know? He's looking for the bed I have in my van. I can't believe he's only asking $20!? Guess I could just do a trade (even though z beds seem to go for a bit more..); if we're both happy with our beds why not do a fair trade! _________________ 1987.5 wolfsburg hardtop

Are you kidding? That thing NEVER had a problem! And I do believe the title mentioned bed, sink, icebox (not fridge) and cabinets.
Kind of funny to see that picture. That was Stanagon's Westy. I bought it a couple of years ago, took the Boston Bob built engine (serial number CV STANAGON) and put it my '83 Westy, and scraped most of the rest. It was far from that condition by the time I got it. The engine is still humming along, and I am proud to be driving around with an engine hand built by homie Bobby Donalds. We still miss you down here, Bob!

If you are really looking for storage you should get a Westy bed. That seat you are thinking about does not have the large open storage spot below it that a Westy bench does.

But if I built or found a base for that seat, I would have the storage space that is naturally there under the seat, yes? _________________ 1987.5 wolfsburg hardtop
