New to the water cooled VW's - AC guy. Looking at a winter vehicle - has a 1.8T engine, and a 6 speed manual (didn't know they even had 6-speeds!) Wondering what the general consensus is on these engines - reliable, finicky, crap, anything in between? Also, were there really 6-speed trannies in these? And if so, are they reliable?
Thanks in advance for any input! _________________ 72 Super |

If it came factory with a 6 speed it would be a 337, 20th anniversary or GLI. Decent transmission but do some research on the motor. Timing belt motors are kind of high maintenance.
What year, model and miles? _________________ 59 Single Cab, 64 Type II, A3 GLX, A4 GLS, B5 GLS |

So it's the Turbo S. They also came with a 6 speed. 65k is pretty low for a 1.8T. Regardless of miles, it has been 10 years + and I would replace the timing belt, T-stat and water pump. That is always the biggest concern with these cars. 20 valves is a lot to replace if and when the belt breaks. I have been there with the wife's 30V V6 Passat. Spent more then the car was worth fixing it all. _________________ 59 Single Cab, 64 Type II, A3 GLX, A4 GLS, B5 GLS |

| also be prepared to put premium gas in. these cars do not like it when they get regular in them. The headlights can be a pain in the butt to change on a beetle, I would def look into a timing belt and pump or see if it has been done recently. and vacuum lines, they have a problem also they get worn out and break if they are the cloth ones. and the last thing I can think of was the coils, some were bad some had a recall. Another thing you should look out for is if it has a ABS light or Check engine light, walk away, they can be a easy fix or it can be a very deep seeded problem that will cost u lots of diag time and car down time sometimes. |

Solid advice in the two posts above. I would add if you drive as little as the original owner(s)--assuming 65k is 6.5k per year and not 50k the first four years and shut down after that--do your regular interval maintenance by date rather than by mileage. My dad's '02 Passat has the 1.8T with even less mileage and we are on the regular maintenance even if only 2k miles have elapsed. If you haven't bought it yet, see what records the owner has. Low miles can be a plus but isn't a plus by default. _________________ '09 Eos Komfort ... '97 Vento GT ... '02 Golf GLS TDI
