|
Does anyone have any tricks for removing a mirror glued to the windshield? After sticking it there 40 years ago, I think it's time for a new one, but I don't want to chance cracking the glass.
Thanks.

I heat up the outside of the windshield over the area where it's glued with a heat gun first then go inside and heat up the mount the same way. After heating it for a bit you'll want to twist the mount instead of trying to pull it straight out. After it's off use some rubbing alcohol and a razor to clean the remaining glue off of the windshield. _________________ My build thread http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=482400 |

| Mine has fallen off at least 5 times in the last two years. Driving drunk neighbors home from a party seems to be a surefire way to have it knocked off. |

I used a 1 inch sharp wood chisel. I put the bevel against the windshield and gave it a little love tap. The sharp point slid right under and it popped right off. _________________ I'd rather be an hour early than 5 minutes late. (Mine)

DO NOT just grab it and twist. I've made that mistake. I thought, "It gets knocked off all the time by just bumping it, surely if I just give it a twist it will be ok." Any other time it would just fall off..... Maybe a sharp rap with heavy object from side would do it...

Ok, so after all that, when I took the windshield off to replace the bottom gasket, I leaned it against the back cushion on our sofa, tilted it forward to work on the gasket and the mirror fell off. There must have been just enough pressure on the bottom sofa cushion to make it pop. Go figure. _________________ -------------------------
