so waiting on some stuff to arrive, i got bored an finally got around to finding out why the semaphores were getting lazier, pulled them out numerous times to check on a battery, checked the lines to them n back earths and everything. finally bit the bullet, got a small screw driver n tightened up every terminal screw in the car! (not a hard job but puttin it off.) so now everything is runnin smooth again an the generator light in the dash is not glowing anymore either!

mmmmmmm

paint? why? only original once. this is one of my favorite cars on the samba. read his sig. at the bottom of his posts," shiny paint don't make it worth any more". funny how it has to have paint for it to be cool to some folks. all my favorite cars at shows are the "survivors". ever seen the full metal jacket split, sick ass car!

It's ok briyenkieth Henry is just shit stirring. He knows I won't ever paint it. Ever.

There was a period of time when I would of, I used to have a 54 bug that I resprayed an did other things I'm now ashamed of and if I had found it again it would of been preserved not restored.

Even if its an inch of original paint left, it's still original. An in my eyes now should be left, but horses for courses and everyone is entitled to their own opinion of what should be done and do what they want to their own car.

I've seen the metal jacket split in the flesh a couple of years back an it's amazing. Wish we had more splits in Australia!!

Where did you get your floor mat buttons? Cheapest I could find was at The Thing Shop for $3.83ea.

**EDIT** Just realized you have a May '57 36er. I also have a May '57 engine# 1859653. If I read your engine# correctly at 1874302, that means our engines are about a week apart! Sorry I think thats badass.

79,631 engines made in May
Thats roughly 2,568 engines a day (assuming weekends)
Your engine is roughly the 37,864th engine they made.
My engine is roughly the 23,205th engine they made.

Alright I'm done hi-jacking, sorry thats cool shit.

Hi Schwing & D-Train,

My engine number is 1872496, and my car is also late May of 1957 production. The chassis number is 1552529, and my car left the factory in Wolfsburg on May 28, 1957. The engine and all other parts are original to the car.

Good luck with your cars!

Bruce

D-train, thanks for the reply!

I have followed the work you have done on your car every step of the way, and I admire a man who wants to do it all himself, and is not afraid of the challenge to jump in there and give it a go.

Really nice work, Mate. Enjoy your car and drive safe!

Bruce

so, had a shudder in the clutch an felt like the mounts had gone again, worst job but had to do it.
out with the engine, undid the box, swapped mounts an installed again, shimmed the bowden tube, easy but time consuming.

then...

battery has been goin flat, so thought id swap regulators over to see if that was the problem.
after installing everything i connected it all up bar the reg.
got sidetracked.
came back to the car an hooked up the battery,
tried to start it.
nothing.
popped the hood, checked fuses an stuff..
got back in an tried again.
still nothing but a burning smell.
shit.
ran to the back and seen the smoke.
unhooked battery.
too late, the damage has been done.
the wiring had earthed out on the generator an fried all the wiring.
time for a new loom..... again.
rookie mistake. so fuckn pissed.

4mm plate cut 6"x4" these won't be goin anywhere.. Seen a mates new 4x4 with 2"x2.5" 2mm plate sikaflexed on. Looked shit.

Running cost so far.
Plates: $10
Nut n bolts: $5
Total: $15

Crap about the wiring "thermal event". Hope it's a straightforward fix.

Are those plates going to be anchor points for some long safety belts, mounted at the back firewall??
