So I am on my way home from work around 1 am this morning. Just cruising along on the freeway with the windows down when I start smelling something burning. I look in my rear view mirror and can see smoke coming from the engine bay into the cab. As soon as I notice that I feel a loss of power.... Oh boy Shocked I take my foot off the gas, push the clutch, and the engine dies.... d'oh! I pull off to the side of the highway and pull the dipstick and observe smoke coming out of the tube. I check under the car and everything looks ok. My oil sump was still there and appeared fine. I added some oil and tried to start it as a last hope. No luck.... As you have probably guessed, OG mechanic let me know my motor froze. Now I need to decide where to go from here... Sad

PS I know it has been a long time since I last posted anything... The car was running great

Sorry to hear you experienced this failure. This is rare, unless it was real low on oil.
My guess is, that from my experience, if the bearings seized, then the case and crank are shot. It usually warps the case bad.
Time to locate another engine to rebuild. Your heads will probably be OK, but check them good.
DO NOT buy a GEX rebuilt.

yeah i'm pretty bummed. It had plenty of oil so something else must have gone bad. I might look into finding a 1.8 L 914 motor because I'm not sure how much of the motor will be salvagable. How much am I looking at for a replacement motor?

Talk to Jack at Blodgett's garage over in San Berandino. They built me a really nice 1776 and were able to keep it FI. It was worth every penny!

Thanks for the replies. Any leads on motors is appreciated as I will probably be calling all of them. The idea of a 914 motor with a freeway flier 4th gear is appealing but it is bad timing as far as money goes. Anyway I am drinking my sorrows away at the moment Boo hoo!

if you don't mind the shipping costs, check into Russ Wolfe's engine building services; the 1776 that he built for my square has been nothing short of awesome...

Pull the engine, disassemble, inspect, and refresh or rebuild it yourself.

Way less money, and a good time to boot.

So a little over two years of Hilda sitting in the garage with a seized motor and I am finally getting to rebuilding the motor! Owning a house has put my squareback on the sidelines. I dropped the motor out on Wednesday

I stripped it down to a long block

Now off to Brothers VW Machine Shop in Ontario. I have a set of dual Weber 40 DCNF 12 carbs. I'm going to go from 36mm to 37mm on the cylinder head. I didn't want to go to 40mm because I want decent fuel economy. I am also changing out the cast iron crank shaft with a stroker counterbalanced crankshaft. I'm just hoping the case isn't warped.

Glad to be back posting after a 2 year hiatus...
