Blankmange,
slow down there, no need to attack. I heard this from a Volkswagen specialist, and that is why I mentioned it on this forum.
Having said that, going through my Bentley manual, I can find no reference to the wheel being removed with the drum attached. My understanding was that the larger diameter hole (refer to the 5 hole rim in the picture above) causes a weaker structure, compared to a normal pressed steel rim, that is solid throughout. The physics makes sense. Maybe someone can comment.

Don't worry they're just ragging you. I think Tram is right...and it's the only thing I've heard about keeping the rims attached...is when you are removing the drums to get to do the brakes. If you leave the rim attached it gives you a better purchase to remove what could be a stubborn drum. _________________ John.

not an attack, just a question as to why/where that misinformation was coming from... _________________ póg mo thóin

Today was the joining ceremony of a beautiful Italian body and a German engineering masterpiece of a chassis. A tribute to the automotive masters.
The process was fairly simple, everything lined up without a problem.
Two snags though, the lip under the body had to be cut away where the rear jacking points meets the body. And the two rear M10 bolts were broken off in the chassis, so had to have it drilled out and tapped.
Now on to doors, wiring loom, head lining, windows and engine.

|
|
So after another week getting lost in Ghana and Nigeria, I finally got home, and got to spend some time on the Karmann Ghia.
She received her doors, and now the puzzle is looking more and more complete.
There is one problem though, the right hand side door seems to be hanging ever so slightly (2mm at the end). Is it normal to add shims to Karmann Ghia door hinges? |

The first thing to do is make sure to door hinges are good. I usually test the hinges before I put them on the car. If you can easily open a hinge by hand then it likely has too much wear. A good hinge should be hard to open by hand. If the hinges are good you can use a jack and a block of wood to raise the door and in some cases you can tweak the door into shape by hand. You will be amazed how much you can adjust a door with a little force. Shims should not be needed unless the hinge pillar was repaired. |

Any updates on this one, or either of the other two Ghias? |

Hi
I would like to get in touch with the mechatronic engineer from South Africa Cape Town who posted that he has 3 Karmann Ghia's to restore.

For those who were following the triple karmann ghia restoration project we wanted to give an update on the progress. My wife and I (Melanie and Russell) bought two of the Karmann Ghia's as seen in the above thread (White one and the blue one) in April 2015. We have been working hard on the white car and completed it in December 2015. We had a lot of great help without which it would never have been done. See photos below for project progress
The car drives really well and it has already been in it's first car show in Cape Town. Once the other car is done we'll up load some pictures of that one. |

Hi Russell1975,
About two weeks ago the blue one was advertised for sale, but I lost the details. Is it still yours and is she up for sale ? Very keen. My son and I are looking for a project and 20 years after my last Ghia, the itch now needs to be scratched urgently
PS. The white one looks awesome ! Nice work !
