This is in my 58 Bug. As you can see it's electric, made by VDO. The car was sold new with it. The car was sold new in Belgium.

Yes I have. 1958-1961 VDO gauge. It was an option, as well as a Perohaus clock.

Often seen item @ swapmeets here in California. Unfortunately, not very sought after either. The RHD version however is very sought after

Ha, every 61-67 bug except standards here in aus had the RHD electric ones.
They're everywhere, 100s of them laying around in peoples sheds.

I'm pretty sure it says VDO Australia on the face though.

Maybe for those who can't find a real one. RHD electric fuel gauge has a very different bezel, so not as easy as flipping it around Rolling Eyes

It's not as if all the rare stuff from here isn't all ending up in the US anyway Laughing

I swear there is more 50/50 tail lights and flash kits in the US than there is here.

there is still a variation in australian electric RHD fuel gauges.

note the size of the last 1/4 of the tank. the earlier style with the larger 1/4 used a longer sender. in2vw's did post a scan of the sender part numbers on AVD but it is long gone. both gauges both have the same part number. 114 018 331
the two gauges are 7.61 and 9.61 so that narrows down the date they changed and makes the big 1/4 style another 61 only part. Very Happy

btw the last 2 pairs of half/half's i sold only got advertised in australia (they did go to victoria though). Razz
i have seen 2 variations of bulb holder and at least 3 variations of lenses with half half's too.

edit: the pics would help.

It's funny most 60-61 bugs had there 50/50s swapped decades ago cos you couldnt get lenses for them.
Now everyone is hellbent on scouring the earth for a pair and refitting them.

Is the bottom terminal supposed to be a ground wire? Mine never had a wire on that tab (as far as I know) but seems to operate normally. Should I add one?

Use a dash grill from a 1962-67 bug.

What RareAir said. Use a later grill. I can't really make a pattern from mine without taking it apart, and I'm not doing that.

I just did a search in the SAMBA classifieds and came up with a few. Search fuel gauge grill.
