I am in the process of getting my dune buggy project back together. I inherited this project from my Father in law 3 years ago. He started building it 25 years ago and never finished. The project has been a lesson in patients to say the least. My father in law over the years had forgot a lot of the details around the part vintages for the items he used to create the driveline, brakes, etc..etc. This made it tough to source parts as there was a lot of trail and error getting parts, trying to install them only to find out I had the wrong part. Send it back and try again over and over until I got it right. For the most part the buggy is rebuilt and nearly back together. Currently I am trying to get the motor mounted to the trans and this is where I am looking for some help.

Right now I have got the motor matted to the trans and it is all being held together with one bolt that goes through the starter, starter housing and engine block. In all of the parts that I inherited I can not locate any of the other mounting hardware. What I am wondering is if there is a source I can find the nut and bolt specs for the hardware I will need. I think the top should be easy to source. My bigger concern is can someone tell me, or direct me to what size nuts I will need to fit the bottom mounting studs? I have looked though a couple books I have and not of them call out specific bolt size, nut sizes and thread specs.

The motor is a Super Beetle motor and the transmission is a early 70's type 2 transmission.

I read the lower engine mounting studs are not long enough for the 002 bus trans.

My 74 engine has a threaded bung on the top of the engine opposite side from the starter.

What is the purpose of the 2 parallel tubes going forward from the rear torsion tube? Perhaps to keep the tube from twisting?

Thanks. I picked some up tonight and got them on.

[email protected] - The studs where actually long enough to double nut them.

Also, the double bars are the solution my Father-in law came up with back when he was working on this project. The chassis started out as a Corvair 2 seat rail. He wanted a 4 seat VW rail for the family as all of his other rails where 2 seaters. He designed and fab's those up to extend the lower chassis and attach the Bay Window bus rear suspension. It is not pretty but, it is strong.
